The Army Painter spray

I ordered a can of Dragon Red spray paint from the army painter online and recieved it today. I immediatly went out and following the instructions sprayed my space marine half of the assault on black reach. After letting it dry i noticed that the texture was extremely rough and had obscured a decent amount of detail. Has this happened to anyone else that has used The Army Painter sprays or did i just recieve a bad can?

Cheers

The Army Painter spray

I don't know how experienced you are with spray paint, so I'm going to assume you haven't used it before. Please do not take offense if these suggestions are old hat to you.

How was the humidity? Had it rained recently? Since it's summer in England, I'm assuming it wasn't near freezing when you did this?

I have this problem when:

(1) It's very humid or recently rained (same thing).
(2) I'm near the bottom of the can. 10% or less remaining. (Since you just got this can, I'm assuming this isn't the case.
(3) Didn't shake the can enough. I shake mine upside down so that the particulates that settle at the bottom of the can will fluidize.
(4) Too close to the model.
(5) The first squirt out of the can shouldn't be on something you want to paint. Aim away for a second to clear the nozel.

Re:The Army Painter spray

Im Pretty sure its a bad can of paint, its been sunny for the past few days so it cant have been humidity. I made sure i shook the can for a good minute and a half as it says on the can and the online video. It wasnt too close (i learnt my lesson a while back ) and it couldnt have been because of the first bit of spray because it is consistant throughout the whole set of minis. I guess i'll be spending an afternoon stripping minis in the near future :/.

cheers

You realy need to shake AM spray,

90 seconds is NOT long enough, I used desert yellow a lot and I found that to use Am colour primer corretly you need to double your normal distace, and shake that tin for at least 3 minutes

Any chance of sticking a piccie up ?

The Army Painter spray

The Army Painter spray is a very thick paint that reacts with weather changes in very bad ways. While it does give a good coat of paint on minis it is really thick so it needs to shook quite alot or it will spit and sputter or leave a texture espcially if mixed with moisture outside. I am not impressed with their paints for the cost. Cheap Wal-mart or krylon spray paints works so much better and are way cheeper.

Re:The Army Painter spray

The first time round I tried it (pure red though) I got some decent coverage but it was 'dusty' or gritty. And yes in some places the detail was obscured. I've gotten 1 more can and am hoping that it will work a bit better but if not then I'm giving up on army painter spray. Sort of I'll let it slide once (in case it's me - but I've been using GW and other sprays for 13 odd years fine..) but this time round it'd better perform.

The Army Painter spray

I just tryd out Dragon Red on my Black Orcs erlier this week while it was sunny out and it was by far the best coverage and consistancy Ive gotten out of any Spray Can... so Im going to have to agree based on what you described that it was a bad can.

The Army Painter spray

I've used Army Painter's Necrotic Flesh spray recently. I must have shaken the can for at least three minutes - perhaps four. It's also about the way you spray. Seriously. You just need to tap the nozzle and pass by the model once. You do not begin by spraying directely onto the miniatue, nor do finish spraying onto the miniature. You start away from the mini, pass by it once, and finish on the other side. Very light coverage

If you were to do the same with say, GW's Skull White or Chaos Black, the paint would dry, turning into fine particles and you'd get "dust" everywhere.

Their Primers are VERY highly pigmented and they cover a miniature excellently, IMHO of course. There was even a little bit of "texture" (very small "lumps") on my mini too! Perhaps I over-did it?

Oh, and when I mean shake the can, I mean shake the can until your arms are BURNING!

Sorry if this came across too obvious.

Hope this helps!

Cosmic.
