How best to Paint Space Wolves?

So I have been inspired to start painting my Space Wolves by several painting articles I have seen ( I will link which ones in a moment) My question here is this, based on what I have seen I was wondering if Pre-Heresy style grey or true to codex Space Wolves blue-grey is what people think look best. I have seen a well done Pre-Heresy style grey here and some other well done wolves on Dakka at in these posts.
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/215859.page#347650
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/120/220519.page#690151

Which do you think is easier to paint Pre-Heresy or Codex? I am not the best painter in the world so ease of paint job will probably do a lot to help inspire me to get it done. I also want it to look good, not just table top quality, I am trying to get my painting chops up so I think a Power Armor based army will help with that. I have yet to finish an entire set of models. I have done several 2000 point armies but never every model I own for an army and I think that will be my goal for the Space Wolves. So What do you think? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

How best to Paint Space Wolves?

Hi,

It's all down to personal preference really. I prefer the codex colours but it's only because there are plenty of pictures available to try and replicate.

Advice (And you've probably already read some of this elsewhere) for painting the codex colours - I use:

Undercoat: Shadow Grey
Main coat: 50:50 shadow grey, space wolf grey (mix in an empty pot, add a small amount of water for consistency - this way all your models will be painted the same mixed colour)
Wash/Recesses: Devlan Mud
Highlight: Space wolf grey

Armour dents/scars - very little shadow grey, then underline the shadowgrey with a fine space wolf grey and for more depth, add a very small bit of skull white on the underline of space wolf grey.

Hope that helps! Great choice on an army to paint, the uniqueness of each model as a result of the kit makes each model fun to paint, I find boredom sinks in after the 5th generic space marine

For Russ and The Allfather!

How best to Paint Space Wolves?

Thanks for the mix. I tried a model with Gryphonne Sepia as my wash, I think I need to try the Devlan Mud like you suggested though. I am leaning more toward the pre-heresy style from CNC though.

Any other thoughts from people out there?

Re:How best to Paint Space Wolves?

Personally, I don't like the Light bluish gray that GW paints their pups. I prefer using Shadow Gray over a basecoat. The most recent space wolf I painted was a bike commander. Here's the recipe I used for his armor. All metallic areas were painted black then boltgun metal with a wash of badab black. Gold was painted with a brown undercoat folled by a wash of chestnut ink.

The armor used shadow gray as a base, followed by a thin badab black wash. I then highlighted with shadow gray, adding space woulves gray before highlighting to pure space wolves gray. The effect is quite drnamic, but you must ensure that you leave a layer of each highlight behind.

Not sure anyone is still reading this thread but I found another great source for how to paint Space Wolves. It is a "master class" sort of painting, very detailed but impressive.
Capture and Control: First round of Wolves done.

My space wolves are more similar to pre-heresy... with Adeptus Battle grey, highlight with Codex Grey, and edge with Fortress Grey... too me it looks more menacing and dangerous then the codex colorings..

How best to Paint Space Wolves?

Over black for similar to codex (see the 2 wolf guards on my site): space wolves grey mixed with shadow grey in a pot 50/50 use as basecoat, highlight 50/50 of this mix and space wolf grey on the edges, then pure space wolves grey on the very edges.

Over white for a lighter colour (the guy in the duel on my site): the same 50/50 mix basecoat, then wet blend space wolves grey into this over many coats then go up to white on the very edges.

I hope this helps,

Tom
