Hydras.... Hydras everywhere. Repeater crossbows are a better core choice than ever. Firing in two ranks made the handbows of corsairs more useful, and by extension corsairs a little better. They're still not super-amazing, but they do their job (killing other light infantry models) fairly well. Cauldrons of Blood are just peachy, particularly when also the bsb. I can't personally confirm the awesomeness of witch elves (which elves? the witch elves!), though I've been told as much, particularly when loaded up with the armour piercing banner and/or killing blow via the cauldron of blood.

Re:starting a Dark elves army

Get at least one unit of light troops - Dark Riders or Shades. Both units should be between 6 and 10 models strong. If you really like them, take two units. These guys are essential for holding important pieces of terrain and slowing down scary enemy units

Lokhir Fellhart is brutal in 8th Edition, since opposing units often have many ranks (he gains a bonus that depends on how many ranks the units he is fighting has). Put him in a unit of 20 Corsairs with the Sea Serpent Standard (which grants frenzy) and they should be able to mulch enemy infantry. Deploy the unit in a 7 wide, 3 deep formation to get a good number of attacks (many infantry units are five models wide, which means a 7 wide unit will get maximum attacks against them).

Get another 5 Cold One knights. Take a unit of 9, and convert the spare model to be a Master with the Battle Standard. This will make the unit less likely to fail Stupidity checks, and the BSB is just really useful all around. Consider giving the BSB the Hydra Standard - the unit will be able to dish out an insane number of attacks.

Consider buying a Hydra, he's really great. Don't take more than one, though, since your opponent might not like that (he probably won't like one, but, what the heck? You can't please everyone).

The battalion box comes with 28 warriors, right? I would build all of them either as Crossbows or Spearmen. Crossbows want 15-20 models in a unit to be happy, while spears want 25 or more (probably more).

So, vague army list:

Lokhir Fellhart
Sorceress
Master BSB
- 700 points

20 Corsairs
25 Spearmen
15 Crossbows
6 Dark Riders
- 800 points

9 Cold One Knights
-325 points

Hydra
-175 points

Re:starting a Dark elves army

I wouldn't build all of the corsairs (if you have already don't worry, they need the bodies in their units). I would save 5 of their cloaks/legs for making a BSB on foot, charioteers, and other characters (need a model in case their monstrous mount gets killed). To make foot characters use the corsair legs and back, then the CoK front armor, helmet, arms and weapons.

You can then get a HE chariot and use the two spare corsairs you have for drivers.

Re:starting a Dark elves army

Sorceresses do not belong on cold ones. When the CO goes stupid, so does the sorceress and that's a lot of points to have sitting around idle.

Put the sorceress on foot or on a Dark Steed. On foot she can go in a unit for the LOS save, and on a Dark Steed (with a Focus Familiar) she can run and hide or (with Pendant of Khaleth) pick her fights.

PS: I recommend checking out Druchii.net.
starting a Dark elves army

So many different ways to run them. In light of this new edition, some better than others.

I will add some advice that I haven't seen that might allow the army to play strongly in every phase, which is what I think makes the game fun.

Level 4 Supreme Sorceress possibly with a backup Level 2 Sorceress for the magic phase. You can easily find 2 of thse models on foot or give one of them a steed for mobility. Level 4 will help you get your big spells off and keep the dispelling phase mostly under control. Pendant of Khaeleth can help the Level 4 stay alive a lot longer, just don't fling her in a fight where a lot of swings will be coming her way.

20 Crossbowmen with shields and Musician. Me likey.

Not sure about the big 'ol unit of Cold One Knights being a reliable charging force. IMO 5 with a full command are enough. I guess I just don't like the back row not being able to fully swing and not really mattering against a ranked up unit.

Shades with extra hand weapons are awesome, new Scout rules are awesome and have great synergy with their shooting skills. Not a terrible place for an Assassin either if you start rolling up the enemy's war machines. I have been playing around with unit size for them and 6-8 seems like a good number for my style.

In 7th Ed like many, I used two units of 5 Dark Riders with Xbows and Musician. In 8th I haven't done much with them but shooting harrassment, and charge redirects. Almost thinking I might put their points towards a Chariot for awhile.

Like the previous poster said, get a HYDRA!! Fielding more than 1 probably won't help you keep friends.

I don't think I saw Black Guard being mentioned. I really like this unit and their ridiculous amount of special rules. Models are pretty cool looking (for older ones) and not a bad place for a fighty Master or Dreadlord to reside. Armor-piercing banner has pretty good synergy with how they fight IMO if you are not already using it on a Spearmen unit.

Quickly becoming wall-o-text reply.

- Blackbone
