Starting off my first army

Hey everyone, My AoBR set will be arriving any day, but I need a name for my army. It is a SM chapter based heavily around fast assault units like assault squads, bikers (I plan on doing some hoverbike conversions!) and mobile predator armor lines. Not quite sure about the fluff, but I like the idea that the chapter is full of the Emperor's assault reserves, waiting to be called in to decimate heavy defence lines and crack planetary fortifications. They make the first insertion to open the flood gates for the rest of the Emperor's glorious purifications. They are addicted to the adrenaline rush and glory of first deployment.

As for unit makeup, I am a complete newby to 40k, but I like the idea of mixing hordes of jetpacked assault marines and bikers with lascannon predators and techmarines to maintain the armor lines. Any suggestions are welcome here.

The main problem is getting a name. I originally liked the Iron Falcons, but then I discovered another forum member is using that name. Any other suggestions would be great. I was thinking maybe something like the Imperial Eagles, or something involving raptors, but that didn't really stick with me. Feel free to throw in any ideas.

Here is the color scheme I am working with. Note that the shoulders and belt are orange, not gold, and the skull and eyes are silver, not grey:

The emblem can be seen on some terrain I made here:

I will look into the BA codex, a friend had suggest that, but I haven't got around to it.

And Blackhand, I might change the emblem depending on what my final name choice was. I just did that because I cannot freehand a falcon...

I was toying around with the idea of naming them something with "guard" or something else defensive. After all, the entire galaxy belongs to the Emperor, some parts he just hasn't gotton around to conquering yet. Perhaps something like the "Storm Guard", or maybe refer to the group as the Imperial Wind, and each unit is a Stormrider. or maybe the Stormriders could work as a chapter name.

Re:Starting off my first army

I decided I care feth all about if a chapter called the Storm Lords already exists, and that I'm going to make it my own anyway.

Here we go:

The Storm Lords are the Emperor's finest assault troops, deriving from the unstable star-world of Malachor V (bonus points for reference ). There the chapter utilizes the solar storm's energy as fuel for imperial forges, as well as more secretive purposes. With the indoctrination of each new space marine, techpriests imbue the soldier with solar energy from the star. While this heightens the marine's physical, and occasionally psychic, abilities, it comes at a terrible price. If any Marine goes too long without expending the stormforce in battle against the xeno enemies of the Imperium, the power drives them into a crazed psychic frenzy usually ending with the consumption of their body and mind. (This is how I can tie in with the blood angels if I wanted to)

The Storm Lords are the first unit deployed in planetary assault, and are responsible for breaching enemy defenses in order to provide an entry point for the rest of the Imperial purge. They achieve this by utilizing fast attack forces including jump packs, hoverbikes, and deep strike reserves followed by a mobile armor line supplemented by Solar Techpriests. Without room for half measures, the Storm Lords will pick a point of entry and throw everything they have at it, prefering to expend entire platoons cracking defensive lines than retreating to regroup (this is were They Shall Know no Fear kicks in). In the event that the enemy is too well entrenched for normal means to succeed, the Storm Lords will bring in Psykers with nightmarish powers to rain warpish hell down upon the traitors.

I don't know too much about 40k fluff yet, so if something doesn't work, let me know.

btw that generator suggested the raging hippos.
Re:Starting off my first army

I now have pictures of my entire army primed black (although some look grey, they are black when you see them, the flash is just weird. Unfortunately, I glued on all the guns, which makes painting the marine stupidly difficult. So, I will be knifing off all the guns, priming the spots underneath them, stripping a few of the marines that you will see from the pics are WAY overprimed (I am not a good judge of how far 12 inches is from my mini to the can), repriming those minis, painting, and glueing on the guns. Fortunately, my important minis (Lord Captain Tiresias Morgan, SM Sargeant, Dred) turned out well, with the exception of my termie sargeant. He got a glob of primer coagulated inside the can from leaving it in the sun for too long The stripping will be done with the bottle pictured.

I presume that the bases are fine to throw into the Nail Polish Remover?
After about 4 hours, which is an inordinant amount of time to spend on a single trooper, i finally finished a single space marine Unfortunately for the color scheme, I HATE IT. first of all, trying to paint on the blue while avoiding parts that should remain black is really obnoxious. Also, it looks really drab and boring in my opinion. It doesn't help that I tried to make a wash by diluting paint (I read that a 1:10 ratio of paint to water would thin it sufficiently, but I think you must need some thinning agent to get a good flow), which caused the watery paint to just sit on the model in flat places, creating a dirty worn look that I despise. In fact, it looks more like I didn't do enough coats of blue (I did 2).

sorry about the abysmal picture quality.

Instead, I think I will go for the Raven Gaurd's clean black look, which will be easier to paint and organize with proper squad/chapter markings. Also, they are much cooler. Tommorrow I am off to get a few paints, and soon I will have simple green to strip off the overprimed models and this painted one.

I have heard some people use ink to precolour their gravel and sand before glueing it on.

How I do it is -
1 paint the base brown.
2 brush on glue carefully, it dries clear so base colour will show through.
3 dip in sand and crushed kitty litter, let it dry
4 put a decent amount of brown wash on a medium brush and (carefully) brush it on the sand and kitty litter, capillary action will draw the wash off the brush and distribute it around the base and give it a natural shading.
5 I usually follow it up with a drybrush of calthan brown and a mix of calthan brown and lyandan darksun, followed with another wash.

Whew sorry, it looks like a lot more effort when I see it written up but if you are careful you won't wreck your paint job.

Alright, school started, and I've been wading through a swamp of homework. Here is the Raven Guard marine I painted before break ended. I am quite happy with it, and I think If I painted all the units to this standard (as I am sure my highlighting technique will improve) It would be acceptable without draining all my free time. Again, Sorry about the sloppy pic.

And here is a piece of terrain I am really excited about. The gas barrel will have sludge dripping down from that hole in the side (elmers glue sculpting, anyone?). I just need to save up used tea bags for those leaves to put on the ground, as that's the only way I can Do the terrain, other than ripping it up and using my texture spray (which I forgot.
