Oh look, another titan thread...

Hey there, i'm just chucking up a thread to show what i've been up to with my titans. Oh and btw, this is a long post, i've put together two updates from another forum because i'd already started there and i've only just joined here.

The warhound titan below is an old titan i first built a couple of years ago, i only got about half way to finishing it before i gave up though. Recently i was attempting to build a warlord titan with plans i'm working on in 3d on my pc and i realised that i needed some money so that i can buy the materials for my warlord. So i decided to go back and re do the titan so i could sell it so i can build my warlord.

Anyhow, here are some pictures, pm me if you're interested. And i'll probably be updating this thread soon as i get started on the warlord. Till then any comments, critiscism and general tips are welcome.

Bit more about the titan, when i decided to go back and re-do the titan i re-designed the feet to a flat base and a more stable construction, also on my original titan i had used cardboard tube for the joints on the legs, in this version i used plasticard with an internal support so that the legs are far stronger than they were previously.

I chose the paint scheme for my titan simply because ilike the colours red and white. the guns will be silver to math the more worky bits and the plating will be white to help to balance out the colours, as you can see there is more white to red on the legs than there is for the upper body. I hope to get some banners to help the scheme look better too.

This is the plasma blastgun for the titan, i created a hexagon shape, but which was wide. <==> sort of like the crude picture to the left. I then wrapped the 'barrel' in some wire to achieve the ribbed style barrel for the plasma blastgun. This was capped with plasticard on both ends and then stuck to the main gun housing, and capped on the other and with some small wheel like nozzles. Not sure if they're the best i could do, but i can't find anything else more suitable.

Lastly just a shot of the titan with the first of the guns.

One other thing i wanted to ask the community, what should the other gun be, I'm unsure as to make the vulcan mega bolter or a turbo laser destructor. The plasma blastgun appears to be versatile to be used for both anti infantry anf tank, but what do you guys think i should take as the second weapon?

-Rory

Well, i popped into the local GW, everybody oohed and awed at my titan but i was also able to have a few nice conversations with some of the veterans and the manager about titans. So basically I'm thinking of going ahead with the vulcan megabolter, both because it is a very good anti infantry weapon, but also because it is just a cool model.

I also managed to get some work done on the plasma blastgun, painting it up. Nothing special really, just a nice bit of paint.

This is the paper mock up of the gatling blaster for my warlord, at 50% scale. I'm changing the design for the warlord guns eventually so i've decided to make a similar version in plasticard for the warhound's vulcan mega bolter. Seeing as i've already done the plasma blastgun differently.

Also i've got a photo of my 50% scale warlord model, and a 100% scale foot, just to show you what i want to do with my warlord plans when i begin to build it out of plasticard later this month, hopefully later this week. A seemingly insignificant rhino and terminator are shown for scale

Lastly some guy gave me a few spare bits, so i had some fun making these. Need to find a tank commander model though.

Once again any comments, critiscism or just general encouragement is greatly appreciated.

-Rory

Thanks for the comments guys, the encouragement's really apreciated, so if i get some spare time i'll see about painting up the grot dragging the box of bits, i need a profile picture after all...

So anyway, today i'm hoping to get on with making the titan, I still need to sort out a base and the gatling blaster, so hopefully i'll get some of those done today. If i manage to finish those i also want to begin on the 40k scale plasticard warlord titan. I also wanted to ask you guys if anybody has any ideas on what colour schemes i should go with for the titan, i want it to be different to the warhound's colour scheme, but other than that anything would be great, also any tutorials anybody can find to do with painting large vehicles, and doing weathering would be great, when i do the warlord i'm keeping it so i want the paintjob the be as good as i can manage, i'll probably see about finding an airbrush too.

-Rory

For colour schemes: Warlords are generally green or grey. So either of the two colours could be used.

Also, another good idea is to choose (or create) which Legio the Titan belongs to, this means that you can add subtle variations of colour, so instead of the body being green (or grey) it could be red, that kind of idea.

Oh look, another titan thread...

Thanks, i'll see what i like about the paint scheme and i'll tell you lot when i decide. One thing somebody on warseer has suggested is that i varnish my paper mock up, and paint that after it's been hardened by the varnish. I will probably give this a go.

Thanks camboyaz, that was the look i was going for

sjefke, i personally use blender. It's an open source 3d modelling tool, and considering it is free it's a very good progam. Like most 3d modelling programs however the learning curve is massive, but you get that with all of them. The other options are rhino, an architectural/engineering program. But which i've seen used to great effect on a model warhound before. And there's 3dsmax, one of the most expensive programs it's a very good modelling tool. but i don't have the money for it so i don't use it.

So using my 3d modelling program i model the titan or whatever i want, and then save it in an obj format, most modelling programs can save as this. Then i use a program called pepakura. This is a japanese program and it takes a 3d model and calculates the 'net' for the shape and allows you to edit the net so you create a template. Pepakura is available as a free version, but in the free version you can not save it and can only print, i used to get around this by using cute pdf, a 'printer' driver that creates a pdf of the file selected to print. Meaning i ended up with a pdf of the templates. Recently i bought a license for it, not very expensive at all really. And with that i'm now able to export to many different formats such as vectors, to be used in software for stuff such as laser cutters, and images or just a pepakura document meaning i can go back to previous templates and re-organise them later. With the free version i couldnt save an editable version of the template, and could only save an image of it. very annoying with a titan that takes 4 hours or so to unfold and map the parts in pepakura.

So yea, you can use any program to model the file, from google sketchup, also free, to blender or 3dsmax. But you do need to have pepakura, but it isnt very expensive at all.

Anyway, progress wise i haven't actually gotten much done tonight, i got dragged by mates to go bowling. but if i work late enough i might still manage to get it finished tomorrow and will show it off tomorrow hopefully.

-Rory

Re:Oh look, another titan thread...

Okay then, well i didnt get too much done last night because i got dragged out bowling, i did however manage to finish the titan almost completely by working late into the night/morning. So here are the pictures of the vmb i built first. the first picture is most like the true red colour.

As i said i've made it using a more gatling blaster style barrel than a vulcan megabolter, but i'm sure there'll be no confusion around it. The barrels between the two caps are made from hexagonal pencils, with some plasticard tube on the end caps of plasticard to create the appearance of hollow barrels. The bar below the barrels is also made of plasticard and because of the way i constructed it it needed to be glued to the barrels for strength, so unfortunately the barrels do not spin as i would have made them if i could. Still looks cool in my opinion however. Obviously the paint scheme is similar to the plasma blastgun.

I also began work on the base yesterday, having fun with the dad's jigsaw to cut out the shape from mdf. Thankfully iust about managed to keep my arm Having cut out the basic shape i carved it a little with a knife, making it a nice smooth shape and adding some beveled edges. After this was done i use some textured 'spray' paint to coat it in a tarmac/concrete style texture, and after than i painted it black and drybrushed it codex and then fortress gray with a sponge. The legs were later attached to the base by some hot glue. Providing a very secure join that made me wonder why this is the only point during which i used a hot glue gun in the build.

Lastly i worked on the connectors between the guns and the main body of the titan. i made these with some plasticard made into a triangular tube and then ringed at the base on the weapon with a plasticard rim, this was then painted black and then silver to match the titan and some wires were glued to create the impression of some electrical stuff. then i attached the guns to the body at and angle both away from the body and downwards. you can't really see the joins in these pictures, but they do show a 360 of the titan well enough.

Today my brother decided to join in the titan creation madness and he also unearthed his old titan, we have spent today removing all of the plate detail he put on it making it look like a chaos titan and we begun converting it so that it looks the same as the finished titan. So far i have re-built the main body section and the 'wings' i have half re-built the engines and waist too. My brother on the otherhand managed to clear up the head, and the legs and got started on the edging on some the armour plates. Nothing really great to show yet tbh.

Only last thing is that now it's very almost finished, merely banners and a cockpit windows left to do, i need a name for the beast. Any suggestions?

-Rory
