Would it be entirely possible that quite a few loyalits chapters running around are alpha legion succesors? How hard would it have been after the codex astartes was introduced for the legion to take 1000 of their marines, repaint their armor, give themselves a new name, and just hang around for a few centuries before going out in the open and showing themselves ?
This would also explain the lack of encounters with the legion with imperial forces... there just really are not that many renegade alpha legionnaires out there.

Contrary to what Shadowbrand said, the Alpha Legion do not seem to owe allegiance to any particular chaos god or any at all, so they wouldn't be fecking around on deamon worlds. I don't know what sort of loyalist sucessors there would be. I can imagine Alpha legion operatives sneaking in their particular strains instead of pure founding chapters, but there would have to be some sort of purpose behind it. Emperor wins = Mankind rules = less conflicts as the Guard and Marines cleanse the galaxy of any threats.
=> no threats = happy humans =almost nothing to feed on for chaos. But plenty of dead xenos, so its obvious why the cabal wasn't interested in this outcome. The ruinous powers would also dislike it, as they would decrease in strenght.

Horus wins = chaos consumes mankind = eternal slavery = a source of "cattle" to constantly grow for chaos.
Horus would never get free and his fellow traitors had done too much to repent. IMO, the ruinous powers blatantly deceived the cabal,
and anyone choosing to destroy his own "faction" to stop chaos ignores the fact of eldar creating a chaos "god" on their own without

In my opinion, the Legion are playing a VERY complicated game.

They 'know' what needs to be done to save Humanity and not necessarily the Imperium (but maybe that too!), and they've got their own agenda for how to do it.

I think that The Cabal are probably on their 'to do' list as well.

But, as someone already mentioned, WE won't 'know' this unless we're somehow given more information.

Serious note. The fluff in Legion heavily hint at them making a hard choice influenced by the cabal.
As far as them being pro-this'n'that, think about it. the storylines in 40k permeate 10 millennia. Ten Thousand Years. and yet some of the lost are still loyal (the wolves of fenris and their 13th legion).
We also have loyalists (ultramarines, raven guard etc) that have turned to chaos.
It's bound to happen to a rogue loyalist chapter as well, especially considering the nature of the Alpha Legion, but remember, Alpha Legion are no mere marines, high-level powerbrokers and their intel activities are -- dare i say it -- second to the ordo malleus.

And lastly, consider this: They were loyal up to the book Legion and the book didnt mention anything else. my bet is that they are still loyal and will end up pulling a u-turn.

or rather, that's the way i'd take the story if i wrote fluff for a heroic sci-fi/fantasy game.
