The ethereal host, painting my friends ethereal vampires.

Anyways - My FLGS is having a 1000 point fantasy tourney this sunday. My friend have up untill this point painted approximately 0.00% - This is where I enter. Words where exchanged and now I'm going to get it together till sunday. I better get going. I'm aiming for something up and about normal tabletop standard for this sunday, and then the weeks after cleaning it up and getting it to look cool. I'm looking for comments and advice, or just general chit chat

He wanted the whole thing ethereal looking, even though it might not be for gaming purposes. I've gotten started on 6 spirit hosts, a corpse cart, and 5 cairn wraiths. Here's so far I've gotten.

These pics are examples (dont wanna show a pic of everyone), all spirit hosts, cairn wraiths, and the corpse is at a painting standard, I think is fine for this sunday- Next step is basing them. Oh - Did I mention there are 2 rerolls per game for fielding a fully painted army? not just 1 dice, the entire throw;-)

Hmm... I think it's a really neat idea, but are there any rules about what constitutes a fully painted army? I've heard of some where they have to be painted in at least 3 colors or some garbage like that.

I also think a similarly-themed basing (for some odd reason, I'm thinking mist- now, how to pull it off w/o looking cheesy... not quite there yet...) is going to make or break these models. I'm not trying to start a fight, but I feel like if they stay the way they are now, it'll seem like they've been based, washed, and highlighted in the same shade and won't really give that "ethereal" feel.

DooDoo# Its basically a white undercoat with different washes, starting with a thick(milky) light blue ending with a semi dark green rather thin wash. Once I've completed this rather simple technique on everything I'm moving over to highlighting and individualising.

HF Izanagi, I checked with the store manager and his okay with the colour scheme counting as fully painted. You're certainly not starting a fight I'm with you, and as said to doodoo, once everything's been painted I'll work on highlights and individualising. Different color shades for individual ethereals and so forth. I enjoy critisicm, keep it coming

I like the look a lot. I think a contrasting base is all it needs in the short run but I do agree that solidifying some of the weapons/details would be a nice touch

Cool, at least you're in the clear. And it's good to hear that you're going to go much higher into the high-lights- I'll stay on this one to see how this is progressing (as I'm planning my own Vampire Counts army as well). Hope I see something to inspire work of my own.

One thing that I just thought of right now would be to do the OSL-Glow thingy for these guys, especially their eyes.

I think one of the pics done by Mark Gibbson or another GW artist have zombies with the ethereal light coming off their eyes... you might have to experiment so it doesnt' look like everyone has spotlights for eyeballs, but I think it might be worth a shot to add some character to the models... Especially the guys in the cart...

Now.. here comes another (probably final) nail to this idea... since they're ethereal, when they emit a light source... do you paint a transparent/translucent light? Or will they be solid and reflect the colors normally...?

DooDoo# thanks

HF Izanagi# I think I'm going for a subtle green/yellow glow on the eyes (as I already own the perfect color for that)

Another OSL idea I'm going for is to make their glow reflect onto the bases dirt mud and grass.

To be transparent or not to be transparent - lol. I haven't figured that out yet
