turboboosting star-engine MADNESS

hey guys, ok heres the dilema:

when you turbo-boost, you must end your move at least 18 inches away from your original starting posistion to get the cover save.... ok thats fine- but what if once completing my move, I then go BACK 12 inches with star engines... the rule for this simply states its use is "in lieu" of shooting... err cool... cheers for being vague guys!, does this mean that star engine moves take place in the movement phase- thus the skimmmer has not "completed its move" when it occurs, or is it in the shooting phase, after having "completed its move" in the movement phase, and thus gets it cover save (despite actually being now only just over 6inches from its original starting place) ??????

Feediz

The cover save is vague as it only says you need to move X inches. The only real thing that says you have to have moved inches from the starting spot is the rules for assaulting a tank. In which case you measure the distance it is from the original spot. With this trick you could likely end up with a cover save, but be easily hit in melee.

feediz wrote:hey guys, ok heres the dilema:

when you turbo-boost, you must end your move at least 18 inches away from your original starting posistion to get the cover save.... ok thats fine- but what if once completing my move, I then go BACK 12 inches with star engines... the rule for this simply states its use is "in lieu" of shooting... err cool... cheers for being vague guys!, does this mean that star engine moves take place in the movement phase- thus the skimmmer has not "completed its move" when it occurs, or is it in the shooting phase, after having "completed its move" in the movement phase, and thus gets it cover save (despite actually being now only just over 6inches from its original starting place) ??????

Feediz

First of all, you only need one question mark.

Secondly, CAPS is considered SHOUTING and is very RUDE.

Thirdly, it is considered polite to include basic punctuation (such as Capital Letters at the start of sentences), to spellcheck your post before posting it and so on and so forth.
Fourthly, Skimmers do not Turbo Boost, they go Flat Out. This is an important distinction as I explain below.

Fifthly(?), it is not vague in any way, shape or form. Re-read the rules for Skimmers and Flat Out. Page 71, Main Warhammer 40k Rulebook, Under the Heading "Skimmers", under the sub-heading "Shooting at Skimmers", Paragraph #1.
It makes no mention of distance to claim the cover save. All it has to have done is move Flat Out. That is, move more than 12" in the movement phase, as defined on page 70, Main Warhammer 40,000 rulebook, under the heading "Fast Vehicles", under the sub-heading "Moving Fast Vehicles", Paragraph #1.

You can, therefore, move 12.0000000000000...0001" in the movement phase, and then 12" back with the star engines, ending up 0.0000000000000...0001" from your starting position, but still able to claim the cover save.

That'll teach me to stay up until 230am without coffee. However, doing what you suggest would result in being automatically hit in the Assault phase, because as clarified on page 63, "when assessing how far a vehicle has moved, only take into account the actual distance covered from its original position. It is rather odd that a dirty big tank can fly in a circle 12" and get a cover save but a small and easy to hide bike can't.
