Characteristic Tests and Characters in units

This may have been covered previously but maybe there is some new light out there. At ard boyz a friendly opponent and I had a discussion about charactertic tests. I am playing WOC with an undivided sorcer with lore of shadow. He was playing a skaven plague list. I tried to pit of shades his furnace which I thought would be autmaticaly destroyed if I got lucky enough to get it off. It doenst have an I value. According to page 10 the unit can take the highest statistic in the unit for the test meaning that if a chieftan is in the unit the whole unit gets to take the test at the I of the chieftan which is very good.

I get the whole thing that the PF gets the PP Initiative but do you all think that the unit gets it. It says "model" touched under the spell while the rule on page 10 says tests taken by the "unit" gets to take the highest characteristic value.

If it works that the unit gets the characters stats that seems to be a bit wrong. Why would a mega unit of temple guard get to use a skink chief's initiative in a pit of shades?

Looking for input form the Dakka community!

ShivanAngel wrote:The use the highest only applies to cavalry or mounted models.

This is almost compleetly true.
The multiple characteristics rule applies to units when the test is on a per unit basis (like panic tests, stupidity checks and so on), and it applies to models when the test is on a per model basis, (like tests caused by Pit of Shades, Purple Sun and so on), so he had no basis to use another model's characteristic.
Furthermore the Plague Furnace and Screaming Bell are not classed as warmachines but rather as unique, and the skaven army book says its a special mount, so as per the mount rules the best statistic he could (or to be precise must) use is the highest one on that model, which in this case is the priest's I 5, while for dwellers below for instance it would be the Furnace's own S 5.
