A question about scenery...

Has anyone ever attempted, or seen or heard of an attempt, to do some type of stained glass piece that would be scale for a 40K building?

I've been doing a good bit of research into Gothic and Romanesque architecture and cathedrals, and have seen some absolutely amazing pics of stained glass, which is why I'm asking.

I'd love to do a Space Wolves motif for a scenery piece, so that would be the motivation behind the glass and the architecture.

A question about scenery...

Yo!

I've seen a couple and they look sweet. Couldn't tell you where to look, sorry, but it was when I was just randomly searching model cathederals and the like.

I reckon if you just used waterered down shades on a thin piece of clear plastic that would work okay.

Alternatively, there were those things that were like an outline of a design made in metal that you could sprinkle coloured sand into the sections and then bake and they made a nice little stained glass piece.

Maybe find some of those, make your own templete out of wire and see what happens!

Sorry, I have no idea what they are actually called though.

A question about scenery...

Inks on clear plastic sheet should do it.

I would do a test piece using acrylic ink mixed with clear varnish. If that does not come out transparent enough, then you could try shellack ink.

Your problem will be to keep the runny inks within the pattern. It may help to paint the pattern with dark grey regular paint to create boundaries.

Theres a piece of scenery that has stained glass in GW Glasgow. I think they took some clear plastic and washed it with different colours. I'll post again tomorrow once I've asked them for a tutorial for me to type in

A question about scenery...

Spyfunk

Hats off to Mediaeval stained glass.
good call mate!

KK has a good point
the problem will be pooling and running.
There are hobby sets of acrylic "stained glass" paints that are gloopy and don't run.

wonder of inks/paints + PVA would work?

If the clear sheet is thick enough it might be possble to scribe the lines so that the paint would trap within the design. The lead could be drawn on afterwards.

You will need a light inside the building to get best effect!

A question about scenery...

The best and easiest solution I've found around is getting an overhead sheet (you know, the transparent ones that you place on the overhead projector) and printing it from the computer.

Nowadays most of us have access to a laser print (be it at home or work) so... that shouldn't be to hard to do.

In worst case scenario, you could always go to a printing place and take your pen drive.

Re:A question about scenery...

Thank you so much for the feedback!

I also wanted to ask you all if you had any ideas for what a Space Wolves difference in Gothic Architecture might involve?

I"m thinking along the lines of doing a basic basilica building, possibly with a removable roof, possibly blown out a bit, I haven't decided.

I know from the old arse Rogue Trader I have, there's a layout drawing of a Space Wolves underground base, but I'll be damned if it's not plain as all get out.

A question about scenery...

Good question

Personally I would be looking to traditional Scandinavian architecture, but that would probably mean not a lot of stained glass. Fenris winters might not be ideal.

Re:A question about scenery...

Excellent Point. I would probably make it an interior shrine piece then with the glass being just a part of that.

I'd like to keep it true to form as much as possible, but damn if i'm not in love with the idea of doing something stained glass

A question about scenery...

Well the shrine sounds good. Obviously the innovation of the huge lights in the gothic period would not be as necessary as I assume there would be interior lighting. So there is no reason why an internal wall of glass for a shrine would not exist. It would be suitably exotic imho and a nice idea. Still think you could back light it as well to make the most of the effect!

Re:A question about scenery...

Very true. After doing a bit of research this morning, I also found this...

Which would be quite awesome with some wolf imagery instead of the dragon/deer image that's in that now. Possibly in some paneling format on the outside walls.

I'm going to have to start doing some sketches here soon.

A question about scenery...

There is tutorial I saw back on B&C. You take a photo of what ever you want, take the window (I think one of the ones from the shrine of the Aquila kit was used) you then cut it out in the shape of the window and stick it on. There may have been more but it looked really good from what I remember.
