red "grey" knights, need paint advice

So, grey knights army, allied to mechanicus, they are all getting converted to mech knights.

I need a metallic red, that is like the shiney boltgun grey to red.

My thoughts were either mechite red mixed with metallic medium, but foundation paints don't like being mixed (or so i've heard) I have some vallejo black/red which will probably mix better.

I've heard chainmail with 5-7 coats of baal red is fantastic, but 10 coats of paint and my painting skills seem like they will turn into a husk of paint before I get a good color.

Vallejo puts out an airgun paint called turn signal red, which may be what i'm looking for, but would like to see a model or two of them before I decide.

so in all, thoughts on a shiney metallic red, and pictures if at all possible would be greatly appreciated.

you could probably do it a more simplified way, depending on the result your trying to achieve. You could just find a mteal base you want to work with, apply it, the add layers of a red wash, or mix your own color of wash by adding water to it, and continue to apply it over the metal basecoat until you get the result your looking for. Best of luck with your army!

Grundz wrote:cy: did you use several kinds/layers of wash? or what? that is very similiar to what i want to do

I used GW's old Red Ink several times, I don't remember exactly how many layers I did with it, just do a layer a time till you like how it looks.

The key thing is that I used the alcohol based Vallejo silver rather then regular mithril silver, their alcohol based metalics are much much more reflective then the regular paints (AND USE A SEPARATE BRUSH WITH THEM!)

red "grey" knights, need paint advice

So I ran some tests yesterday, though I only had vallejo gunmetal grey, and baal red wash.

End result was a metallic redish purple, very dark, I like it. Trying to "shiny" it up I tried putting some reflective clear coat overtop, and it seems that the clear coat dissolves the layers of wash(!) must resolve.

anyways, I'm a little paranoid about dry brushing overtop all that wash, should I be drybrushing more gunmetal grey, or if it is light can I use a red and the metallic will show through?

Thanks for your help!

You know, you can just go to a craft store and buy metallic red paints.
There are a number of brands (Ceramcoat is most often considered the best). And they're only about a buck and a half each for a full ounce of paint.
They're a bit thick, but you can buy thinner for them, or use a little (LITTLE!) water.
If you use thinner, DO NOT use vallejo (etc) thinner. use the thinner made under the SAME brand name.

Eric
