Sticky Tournament Situation- Giving Free Points?

A really awkward situation just happened, recently, in our local area. I've run a Kroot Mercenary army ever since third edition, and have tried to adapt to the new edition and everything. Most of my army consists of the cool, Forgeworld Kroot models, basically the reason I like to have a Kroot army. Of course, Forgeworld models are never allowed in official tournaments, but I've gotten around that by always conceding to my opponent before every game and then using the Forgeworld rules (I enter tournaments for the painting awards, you see). Unfortunately, My first opponent in the last tournament happened to be the one who won it all. Since I conceded to him in the first round, he got full points for a total victory (we played a casual game that he still won). But, at the end of the tournament, he won by two points against the second player. The problem arose because I basically gave him 20 points for doing nothing, but that was so hard to do that no one else accomplished it all tournament (the most points you could get from a single round was 20, I just agree with all my opponents that they get all 20 points). My first round opponent won the tournament by 2 points. In fact, everyone who faced me had their ranking increased because they received 20 points just for facing me. I would like to still enter tournaments just for fun, but it does seem like automatically forfeiting every game could wrongly influence the results. Thoughts?

Sticky Tournament Situation- Giving Free Points?

Your best bet is probably to tell the TO at the start of the event that you're only in it for the painting competition and ask if you can participate in that aspect of the event but play games as the 'bye'.

I usually award a win with no bonus points and full soft scores for the player that takes a bye in a round; if you make yourself available to play a game with the odd player each round so they're not sitting on the thumbs for 2 hours, I'm sure the TO would consider letting you be considered for the painting award; most of us hate having a odd player that has to take a bye, and there isn't always a ringer handy.

If, however, your presence in the event would mean that there is an odd number of players and someone else will have a bye during each round while you're playing what amounts to an exhibition match in the normal pairings, you might want to excuse yourself from the competition; it's not entirely fair for the other players who are there to compete with legitimate armies to have both a bye, and a player who effectively gets a free win, each round.

Too bad Kroot aren't a legit list anymore, it's a cool looking army. Is there any way you could run a 'counts as' army with them with some other list?

Well, I'd be kinda chapped if I was the guy who lost by two points honestly.

My question though is, has this been in official events? If not, you could probably avoid the whole situation by asking the TO if you could compete, and they'd probably let you.

Sticky Tournament Situation- Giving Free Points?

I realize that you have a dilemma in wanting to participate in the painting portion (and some tournaments have separate painting competitions where models are set up on a table and a judge/judges/players vote on best painted).

However, joining a tourney and throwing games awarding full points to your opponent completely messes up the tourney, especially if in your example it is hard to get full points. I would completely understand if other players were upset and as you say the second place player was 2 points out and very likely would have won if the player you gave full points to had to play a real game. This should not be allowed and you should not do this - it undermines the tournament and players confidence in it.

I would talk to the TO to see if there is another way you can get your army into the painting competition without joining the tourney and throwing games.

Franly, one of several things should happen:

-You should understand that you're purposefully screwing up the scoring by conceding, and judge whether showing up to see how well you do paintwise is worth it.

-The TO should either ban you outright for not having a legal army, or throw the stamp of approval on it and let you play.

I don't understand how the TO even lets you 'Play' with an illegal list in the first place.

Yeah, the 'conceeding' every game is unreasonable in a tourney. Especially in a smaller one where your loss really impacts things.

If it was local you could offer to be a ringer for byes if there are any but honestly your kroot models have no place using a kroot codex at any tourney.

Go get an ork codex and play a 'counts as' list or play another army. I know you may love your kroot, but sometimes armies go belly up and have no place outside informal play.

I too think that it is wrong to play and then concede. It totally screws up the rankings.

As a couple of others have pointed out - a counts as army could work. Orks or IG immediately come to mind. Your could even make some cool natural tanks - special ironwood hulls powered by a large animal with a big gun on it. If your modeling and painting skills are up to it - this would be a pretty cool looking army.

If it's a local event, and your army isn't unreasonable, maybe they'd be up for just allowing it in? It seems like they need to go one way or the other!

On your end, I like the suggestion by nkelsch to run a "counts as" list. "Rule of cool" being if your army looks awesome and you're a nice guy, a lot of people (and TOs) wouldn't have a problem with this, especially if you talk to the TO beforehand. I think this is preferable to just allowing FW rules for one player.
