1500 WoC List

Ok so long time 40k player here but just now getting into WHF.
Since I moved it seems that everyone plays Fantasy instead of 40k so I have been researching and trying to develop a list that is competitive but also fun to play. I went with Chaos well since I am a Chaos player in 40k and know all the lore figured would make it a bit easier. Might pick up another Army later as I learn the game and armys however for now this is what I have miniature wise.

Trying to build a 1500 point list from the following models.

Archaeon the Everchosen
Sorcerer
36 Chaos Warriors
20 Chaos Marauders
10 Chaos Warhounds
10 Chaos Knights
1 Giant

Got all of these models in a trade for some old Blood Angels and some Tyranids I had lying around. So any help with current models building a list. I am just trying to figure out all this magic item stuff and what is useful and what I should avoid. Nothing is painted yet and I am in the process of procuring some Halberds for some of the Chaos Warriors as I have read that is the weapon I want to put on at least half of them. I can buy other models as well if I need to. Eventually if I like the game I will build this list up to the 2500-3000 point list that alot of guys are playing with.
Now for 1500 point games I know I wont take Archaeon but can use him as a hero just that is the model I have so listed it.
This is what I was thinking but that is because I have no knowledge of the magic in this game really.
Exalted Hero
Chaos Runesword, Shield, Chaos Steed, 181 points

Chaos Sorcerer
Level 2 Wizard, Blasphemous Amulet, Dispell Scroll, Mark of Slaanesh 175 points

Chaos Warrior x 18
Shields, Mark of Nurgle, Musician, Champion, Standard, 348 points

Chaos Warrior x 18
Shields, Mark of Khorne, Halberds, Musician, Standard, 348 points

Chaos Knights
Lances 200 points

Giant 225 points

Again any help greatly appreciated and thanks for looking and helping in advance.

1500 WoC List

The posted list is a good place to start. Two solid blocks of warriors, 2 moderately equipped characters and a few toys to keep it interesting.

Lances on Knights are not much of an upgrade. Going from S5 all the time to S6 only on the charge is not worth 5 points - some players would consider it a down grade.

You may want to change the mark on the Sorcerer - the other marks of chaos have stronger lores. Or you can go with no mark and chose one of the rule book lores - hard to go wrong with Fire when leaning the game.

1500 WoC List

I would put MoT on the HW+shield warriors. Having a 5+ ward in CC is good. MoT is also 10pts cheaper iirc.

RanTheCid wrote:Lances on Knights are not much of an upgrade. The Ensorcelled weapons are much better then mundane lances. Ensorcelled weapons are magical which means you can hurt etheral creatures. Also +1str at all times is better then +2str only on the charge.

Also on the knights I would at least have a musican and I would consider marking them with MoK or MoN if you have the room. They can lay on the hurt and so might be shoot to death early.

The only problem I can see with using Archaeon as an exlated is that he's on a 50mm base. A chaos steed is on a 25x50mm and that may not fly depending on the person.

Every unit which will have characters in them should have a unit champ. This allows the champ to do the challenging and leaves the hero/lord to grind down on the unit.

The magic that MoS gives your sorc access to isn't as good as the BRB lores. I would go with one of the BRB lores instead. IIRC a hero lvl sorc gets to chose between fire and death.

A giant is a pretty cool and sometimes useful thing, but is too vunerable to warmachines. I would take a hellcannon instead. With large blocks of infantry around you hsould get some good hits. It's also a monster you can move around and attack things with in CC and it is a beast.

Being forced to issue challenges with champions is nothing but trouble. (very bad experience with a champion forced to fight 1v1 against a Skink priest on stegadon while the rest of the unit could do nothing) Even the advice to have the character grind on the unit is only effective against very small elite units. Champions could have a use in protecting a Sorcerer from a challenge, but I don't put sorcerers in units - not with the new template results on the miscast table.

I can see what you're saying, but if there is a unit champ then there is a character. So even if you do have to issue a challenge it would be with the hero/lord and should kill the skink priest in a single round of combat and hopefully he'll survive the steg(not sure if it would gets its attacks and tstomp once the skink priest is dead and the challenge is over). If there is no character in the unit then there is no champion and no challenge to issue. It's not always going to be a win-win situation, but I think the pros outweigh the cons.

I also don't think thats having a hero/lord grind down the unit is only effective agasint msu. With the new rules large blocks of infantry are all over the place and I think it is better to be able to reduce the number of ranks asap so they won't be steadfast anymore.

Thanks everyone for the sound advice. I am going to take the lances off of the Knights and look into Fire for my Sorcerer. I am facing Skaven this weekend so I will see what I can do with them. Going to be fun since its my first time ever playing and really looking to learn more than anything.

Re:1500 WoC List

I think characters grinding units is sometimes nice, but against skaven using your basic warriors for grinding units might generally be better since you're far superior to their rank and file. characters (especially chaos characters) help sometimes as distractors on the field- if the enemy ignores them, they usually pay for it downstream, but if they focus too much they might lose the big picture. so it depends on your opponents, their specific army, etc. At higher points values I do tend to like a lot of rank and file warriors and one or two nasty characters, but I tend to be more heavy on just rank and file at lower points for a balanced army that doesn't lose with the death of one model.

Against skaven, my limited experiences says that the general elite vs horde logic applies; to the best you can concentrate your army on one sector of his at a time and let your units support one another, knights as flankers, both warrior units nailing one skaven unit at once where possible etc. Also, lances on knights are even worse in this edition since your opponent will be sticking around longer in combats, so you'll come to appreciate that constant S5 hitting
