Soul Grinder: speed painting competition entry

My LGS had held a painting comp last night, where each contestant had 4 hours, in store, to paint a fully assembled and primed figure. The only requirements were that the figure be purchased at the store and that it be primed black, white, or grey. I chose to submit a Nurgle Soul Grinder. The 4 hours was pretty intense, but I had a blast and learned a lot about speed painting. I'll write up an article later. I'll touch it up in a week, after I get it back from the store, but comments are appreciated.

I decided on the soul grinder because it was a figure that didn't have a base, was big enough to use some very large brushes on, and Nurgle because a little bit of sloppiness actually looks better.

That's ridiculous, I've been known to spend more time prevaricating over a model.

Nice work in the time frame though, did you win?

Soul Grinder: speed painting competition entry

Here's the step by step and schedule:

Soul Grinder – Step by Step

Hour 1 (lots of this done with a 1" flat brush)
Overbrush Scorched Brown
Overbrush Gunmetal Grey
Basecoat armor plates Gnarloc Green
Re-edge leg plates with Gunmetal Grey
Basecoat hoses Mechrite Red
Wash torso, chassis, and plates with Paynes Grey in this order

Note: I actually washed the arm and torso armor as soon as the basecoats were dry, because I needed the wash to dry before I could start working on the flesh. In this case, being able to separate the model into torso and chassis was critical.

Hour 2 (most of skin done with a 1/4" flat brush"
Basecoat torse Tausept Ochre
Basecoat torso Bubonic Brown
Highlight with Bleached Bone/Polished Bone
Wash Thrakka Green
Re-highlight Polished Bone
Wash thinned Baal Red into exposes muscles

Hour 3 (wash must be dry)
Basecoat spine, teeth, and bone ridges Snakebite Leather
Edge plates Brassy Brass
Wash Brass and SB Leather areas with Devlan Mud
Blend in Polished Bone and White

Hour 4
Edge with Gunmetal Grey/Silver
Paint pistons Silver
Weather with rust powders
Wash rings with Baal Red (didn’t get done)
