Also, you might want to consider getting better at batch painting. I've found that painting guardsmen 3 at a time increases the amount of time it takes to get anything done by 50%, but you get an extra 200% painted minis out of the whole thing. Definitely a faster way to do things in the long run.

A purple ink wash might be better than black. Shades nearly as well without looking dirty.

Another option is to stay with the black primer, then dry brush light gray before applying the base coat.
