Some of the earlier books are casually racist in the way that much of the western world was at that time.

Yes, the early stuff tended to be a bit racist and if you wanted to, you could make fun about Tim managed to get tied up at least twice in pretty much every book but they're still fun.

It was a different age, 'racism' while technically correct colloquially implies hatred and so I would use a different descriptor. It can certainly be seen as offensive to Africans, and Arabs, and is controvercial enough to provoke lawsuits and stock relocation from time to time, but not a withdrawal.

I'm a bit freaked out by the pics in the same way I found Beowulf a bit freaky. I don't think "photo real" is quite the term to define the effect.

However, I am a massive Tintin fan. Herge was an artisic genius. Check out some of the drawings of cars and planes in the books and see how accurate they are. It all adds to the sense of realism.

The racism criticism, has to be put into context, it was written a while ago and Herge has gone on record to say he was wrong and was effected by the 'west European culture is superior' belief of the time, he has also rewritten alot of pages.

Just think how people would react to Shakespeare's portrayal of Shylock if it was written now.

To be fair most of the racism is pretty tame, compared to some of the hateful content coming out at the time.

While there were some racist overtones in some of the earlier stories, the Blue Lotus story shows that Herge can recognize his own mistakes and learn.

on the other hand... Tintin is definitely gay tho

He's a guy with a tiny toy dog who's main female relationship in the books is with Madame Castafiore (a rich matronly soprano)

Actually people said that it was racist in the sense that what was committed to the page at the time was fairly common and within societal norms. It is looking back that we see how inconsiderate and thoughtless it could be to represent people in such a way. The racism has to be put into context, and has been pointed out (over and over and over) in this thread.
