Griffons! Does anyone use them?

The general consensus seems to be that the High elf prince on a griffon in the IoB box is not a decent choice. Is a griffon (griffin?) lord a viable choice for any army? Empire General on one seems worthwhile, and I believe Bretonians have a somewhat similar option.

A lot cheaper than a Dragon, and enables your fighty Prince to take on those pesky little units (Skirmisers etc) with wild abandon, allowing your infantry to do what they do best, shredding the enemy infantry.

Don't get me wrong, if points can be spared for a Dragon, get a Dragon. But otherwise, the Griffon is a perfectly valid choice. And you know, the points difference twixt a Dragon and a Griffon can be well invested elsewhere, something that detractors often overlook. For instance, comparing a Dragon Lord to a Griffon Lord, and declaring 'the extra points are best spent on Dragon' is one thing, but consider you can, for the same points fit in a couple of Great Eagles, or even a single Bolt Thrower, or perhaps Chariots....very different picture!

Really? Not that up on my High Elf points.

But if that's the Sundragon, I find them slightly arse to be honest! Possibly because I've only fought them as mounts for the Wizardy bloke, and simply kicked his teeth out, then chase down the Dragon!

It's why a high elf griffin is so bad. the worst dragon is still better than it. griffins in the empire army are better because they only have 1 dragon option that is considerably higher cost than it is.

Fair enough. So is the Griff 250 then? I play Dark Elves, and for it's points I really do favour a Manticore as a Hero or Lord mount, simply because in a challenge, I find it pants wettingly funny to see it Killing Blow something really hard.

Got 4 Killing Blows on Skulltaker once! Opponent was not amused!

Well, i don't think i can say the exact points cost. but 250 is higher than the sun dragon and the griffin. and as for the manticore, it's hands down better than a griffin ever thought about being. wish my elves could have one :(

Griffons! Does anyone use them?

I think the standard price for a griffon across books is 200 points, I remember looking it up once. I believe in the Empire one being better, but mostly due to the lower cost of their general/captain. A high elf sitting on a griffon is a huge investment, who isn't well protected. A empire leader sitting on a griffon and kitted with a shield and full plate is very durable!

Griffons! Does anyone use them?

The griffon use to have a spot as the only large flying mount that didnt take up a hero slot. Since this no longer applies and the sun dragon beats it for T, A, AS, W and has a breath weapon for 30 pts (im not 100% sure about the wounds) the sundragon is hands down better.

Griffons! Does anyone use them?

Empire general on Griffon isn't too shabby. You're looking at about 300 pts with a normal weapon, shield and plate armour, which is considerably cheaper than a HE Prince.

Personally wouldn't take it as it's a bit of a points sink for Empire but it has it's place on the table and could prove to be interesting to use.

And it expands the general's IP LD bubble to 18", slightly more useful in a manling army than a pointy ears force. I'm always happy when I see some of the new griffons around the shop, but also always sad when I hear they've never seen the tabletop

- Salvage

They could work but dont except them to mow down infantry blocks on their own. Last thing you want is to have your poor general stuck with 100 skaven slaves and a HPA

Speaking of griffons, Kinda weird that generic empire griffon costs more than emperor on deathclaw

kenshin620 wrote:Speaking of griffons, Kinda weird that generic empire griffon costs more than emperor on deathclaw

Or you could do what I did and pick up a IoB griffon and slam on a general. It's a bit of work but I'm happy with it =D

Though I agree with Boss Salvage, they're much more useful in an Empire army rather than a High Elf one, which is unfortunate. If you ever get the chance to play a MASSIVE battle of like 5000pts then you could easily fit him in there as well as a dragon or two =P
