I was waiting for someone else to comment as I haven't perfected my metallic painting techniques yet, but since no one else is doing it...

You shouldn't apply boltgun metal like that. Try using a black or dark grey undercoat (maybe grey would be best) and drybrushing over it. Again, I'm no pro, maybe you should research it yourself . The hands and helmet do look awesome though!

Btw what sort of metal are you using for the bolter? It doesn't look like any of the GW ones.

If your useing black undercoat and you want to get a smoother finnish with you boltgun metel then give it a waterd down wash of boltgun {about 20% water} then a 50% wash of black dont worry about being messy as you then go back and paint the soft armour bits eg armpits /back of the knes with black after you have done the rest of the armour .. you can do the same thing with your golds but just use a brown wash.

Hmm it is not bad but there is not much to praise either.. I'll give you few tips.

First of all when you start painting miniatures you should always apply basecoat. I don't know if you have used it or not but I'll say anyway. It can be black, grey, white, brown or some other colour depending what kind of colour scheme you have. But black and white are the most universal. As your model constist mostly of metallic colours I would suggest black basecoat for that kind of models.

And when you start painting make sure you thin down your paints enough. Just add some water to your paints(if they are acrylic based like GW or Vallejo paints for example) and mix them up well. That way you can avoid those nasty lumps of paint and rough surfaces. And don't try paint erverything with one coat. Paint always multiple thin coats and let the paint dry well before adding another coat.

Use washes.. They are very easy way to add depth to your models.. Badab black is great for metal and devlan mud can be used metals, gold and various different colours.

Crushy wrote:

Btw what sort of metal are you using for the bolter?
As others have mentioned, you can indeed make your own washes. What others have not mentioned is you need some sort of surfactant to break the surface tension of the water, for the was to work. try 10 drops water, 3 or 4 drops paint, and 1 drop dishwashing liquid.

RaegMachine wrote:I've beem painting only 6 months or so. Also, I find it best to put the paint on the palette, and then smear it around some and wait a minute or two until it gets a little tacky. It's not a particular difficult technique but it does require a little practice, and when I'm doing a model, I still do a quick test on something else before doing my main model(s) just to make sure it's right.

took you 3 days to paint this marine? I would recommend a wash for the enitre model, something like badab black applied to this will really give you some nice depth to the model and will dramatically increase the overall appearance. Nice work
