Is Buying the Battlegroup the Best Way to Start Cryx?

I'm working on a possible deal through Bartertown to get some Cryx models, and it's mostly the Battlegroup plus pSkarre, pGaspy, and a couple Pistol Wraiths. But looking on PP's forums at the Cryx lists for those casters, none of them really really seem to use the Battlegroup jacks much. I mean, Slayer seems to get some regular use, but the Deathrippers and Defiler seem pretty scarce in people's lists. Even the Pistol Wraiths weren't as common as I thought they might be. I'm wondering if this is actually a deal I should pass on.

And if not the Battlegroup, what would be a good base module of models to pick up to start Cryx? Raiders seem pretty ubiquitous. Bane Thralls and Tartarus seem pretty common, too. Any thoughts?

I too am starting out in Warmachine. All the people I have talked to so far always recomend playing a few Battlegroup battles first. I have only played a hand full and when learning the rules it seems to be a great size to get to grip with everything. Plus the Cryx Battlegroup comes with 3 ligh jacks and 1 heavy. You can always convert them later into whatever you need.

Is Buying the Battlegroup the Best Way to Start Cryx?

I think the battlebox is a GREAT way to start cryx. Deneghra definitely works well with jacks - her spells can make it so that even the little bonejacks can do some serious damage when the enemy's armor and def are crippled. It also drives home the idea that arcnodes are very important for cryx! The only disappointment is the single heavy. I'd work on getting another one. The slayer is a great jack for how cheap it is!

And as far as pistol wraiths go, they're also very good, especially with [again] deneghra. She can debuff enemy units and even jacks down to where their pistols can really do some damage. Shoot an infantry model, then use the soul token to boost damage against a jack. Then move a bonejack in the way to block LOS to the pistol wraith, or use them to slam the enemy away.

I will throw another vote in for the Cryx Battlebox to start.
Esp. the new plastic one.
You get much of what you will 'need' in the future. Nodes a cheap heavy and a powerful caster that is quite flexible.

Though, I prefer pGaspy as a 'starter' but pDenny can be more forgiving due to stealth and a small base.

Re:Is Buying the Battlegroup the Best Way to Start Cryx?

+1 on pGaspy as a starter, he's more solid overall; Denny is super strong but a little techy and very fragile.

The new plastic battlebox for Cryx is a great buy; more tuned lists will commonly eschew the Slayer and Deathrippers for different models, but from a 'just starting out' perspective, as long as you have DEF15, SPD7 arc nodes and a big beater you'll be fine to get a handle on things.

That being said, do yourself a favor and buy the new battlebox and one of the new Cryx heavy warjack kits, then make yourself a Reaper and a Corruptor and use the Slayer parts to make wreck markers.

-Dis.

I have to agree with dis. Battle box is a good way to start. pDenny is a good starting point, Gaspy is even better but i personally love me some Skarre action. You will always be able to put the archnodes to use, but as you collect you will quickly out grow the slayer for other jacks.
my suggestion is to magnet the arms so later you can swap between slayer reaper and corruptor. as good as our jacks are our strength lays with our infantry and our casters support of them.

Is Buying the Battlegroup the Best Way to Start Cryx?

The battlebox is a really good start for Cryx, with a solid caster, and good jacks.

Something to remember is that the Battleboxes are to teach people how to learn the mechanics of the game, more than to give them a "foot in". That's why the casters of the battle boxes are some of the more straight forward casters available.

Regardless, it's a solid deal for Cryx.

I'd been debating about picking it up to replace the Sorcha that got disassembled to make Kara Sloan not look like a slow. I can always use a third juggy but didn't know if a 4th could be made out of it.
