Generally the official schemes use two main colours, and pick out the teeth, claws and 'muscle' bits with a third and fourth colour.

Then do a bit of shading and highlights, particularly on the carapace parts.

If you don't want to follow the official scheme, you can choose your own colours. You need to choose two colours which work together.

An easy way to paint Nids is to spray prime them with the Army Painter colour primer that matches the main body non-carapace parts. Paint the carapace. Paint the claws, etc and highlights on the carapace.
