Re:tyranids prime

That's easy: They join the carnifex unit and simply walk behind them, obscuring them from the enemy and getting a cover save.

LOL NOT!

The BRB states that any unit that has 50% or more of its models in cover, the entire unit will receive a cover save. Therefore a single carnifex joined by a tyranid prime will receive a cover save if it has a termagant or hormagaunt (or any other type of) screen in front of it, because the warrior is infantry and qualifies for a save. The unit also uses the Carnifexes toughness of 6 when being shot at, since there would be no majority toughness to choose from.

That seems kind of loose, IIRC it requires you to shoot through the squad to get the cover and those models are rather short.

An easier way to do it is have the T-Prime touching area terrain and boom 4+ cover save.

Re:tyranids prime

the easy way is if the Prime is behind the Carnifex, but not part of the unit. the Carnifex is really big and gives the Prime a save.

Primes don't get saves from Gaunts as the Gaunts are too short to cover the Prime. Gargoyals would be a better screen.

Same way you do it with a Hive Tyrant + Guard. Hive Tyrant + 1 Guard, put Guard behind some Termagants or Warriors and bam HT has a cover save.

i somehow doubt that his feet account for 50% of his body.

Doesn't have to cover 50% of his body. He's not an MC, so all that needs to happen is a part of his body obscured (or part of his body between models in a unit).

You have a point in that the gaunts have to be fairly close to the prime inorder to ensure a cover save, but its still not difficult.
