GamesIPlay "Double Trouble" Event - Aero Hobbies - Santa Monica on Jan 15th

After having a blast down in San Diego (Congrats again to Team Dave&Buster - see many, many pics here: GamesiPlay) Our next event will be taking place January 15th at Aero Hobbies in Santa Monica

The Place: Aero Hobbies
The Date: January 15th
The Time: Registration at 11am

Entrance is $10 per person, with trophies for the top team and gift certificates awarded to the top 4 finishers. Gift certificate will also be awarded for Best Painted Army (individual).

Returning players please note the point change - Armies are now 1250 per player (2500 per team)!

Tournament Rules

1. Force Composition: Each team consists of 2 players. Each player fields an army of up to 1250 points, chosen from a single codex (players on the same team may play armies from different codices). Daemon Hunter and Witch Hunter allies may be used normally. Note that teammates cannot "share" points - any unused points by either player are simply lost. Both teammates’ armies must meet Force Org Chart requirements and obey all restrictions.

2. Players only benefit from special rules or wargear in their own army. For example, Player A's units are unaffected by Player B's Chapter Tactics, even though they are on the same team. Likewise, Player B cannot use Player A's Teleport Homing Beacons. A good rule of thumb is that ally's units are only affected if enemy units are as well. Turns are taken as a team, with both players moving, shooting, assaulting, etc.

3. The latest FAQs (available from www.games-workshop.com) will be used. Any rule disputes will be resolved by an appointed judge. Judges' rulings are final.

4. Players must provide a clear, written copy of their army list (including point values) which may be inspected at any time by judges or opponents.

Tournament Structure

Deployment: Deployment Type for each round will be "Pitched Battle." Follow all rules for that deployment type as described in the 40K rulebook.
Mission: A different mission will be played each round. All missions will be objective and/or kill point based.

Each game will last for a maximum of 2hrs 20min (140 minutes), or 5-7 turns - determined as per the standard missions in the 40k rulebook (turn 6 on a 3+, turn 7 on a 4+)

At the end of each round, teams will be required to rate their opponents' sportsmanship score on a scale of 1-5. This score should reflect the opponents' attitude, organization, and sense of fair play.

Each team will play a total of 3 rounds, with final ranking determined first by record, with ties being decided first by Tournament Points earned, and then by Points Allowed.

Thanks and hope to see you all there

Re:GamesIPlay "Double Trouble" Event - Aero Hobbies - Santa Monica on Jan 15th

Hello,

I personally would never consider playing in this event because like so many events now-a-days people keep adding more and more points into an event without adding time to the round to compensate.

I have played in the Adepticon team tournament for several years now (which features 2,000 pts per side played by 2 people per side) and they allow 2 1/2 hours per round and still there are some game match-ups that end up running out of time.

I understand that people always say that they want to be able to use more and more of their miniatures but I personally get very tired of having even one game in a tournament essentially decided by the end of the round time being called instead of the natural end of the game.

I know the rebuttal is usually: 'well just learn to play faster!' But the fact always remains you cannot control the level of speediness of your opponent and often there are people who are good folks but are just not generally fast players. Or if you bring a horde army and end up facing another horde army.

IMHO, if you're going to have 2,500 pts a side (even played by two people) then you need to have MORE than 2 1/2 hours allocated a round. I know people can easily finish 2,500 pt games in 2 hours and 20 minutes (even just when 2 people are playing), but I always try to point out that this is the BEST case scenario. Why put people in a situation where only the best case scenario equals finished games?

Why not allow some extra time for those players who aren't the absolute quickest (so their opponents aren't penalized) or who play horde armies? Or if no extra time is available, why not stick to a more reasonable points limit (2,000 pts per side, for example), even if some people have requested bigger armies sizes?

GamesIPlay "Double Trouble" Event - Aero Hobbies - Santa Monica on Jan 15th

Hey yakface,

Sorry to hear you won't be participating. I know you play at Aero and I was looking forward to meeting you. I won't lie and say we've never had time-limit issues, but we've done eight Double Trouble events to date and the majority of our feedback has been extremely positive.

Last season (6 events) we played at 2000 per side and returning players we spoke with wanted to ramp it up in our 2nd season to increase the list diversity a bit. We increased the time limit to 2:20 at Game Empire and things went rather well. We'd love to add even more time, but as you know there's only so many hours in a day and players do get fatigued so there's a balancing act there.

You're a very experienced player and obviously entitled to your opinion. These events aren't perfect, but luckily we have had many players enjoy them and come back for more.

Cheers,
Matt

Re:GamesIPlay "Double Trouble" Event - Aero Hobbies - Santa Monica on Jan 15th

I totally understand and I hope I didn't come across as harsh, because believe me I've been in the room many times listening to people moaning about how they want higher point limit tournaments.

I KNOW that's the kind of feedback you get, so I guess I just want to put my hand up and give you some feedback as someone who WOULD consider playing in exactly the type of tournament you're running but won't solely because of the point limit vs. time allotment. I don't know if there are more people like me out there, and if there are how many there are, but I'm at least one.

And frankly this reaction is more because this idea is being pushed at SO MANY tournaments now that its just really starting to get to me. I tend to play exclusively 'horde' type armies and while I'm certainly not the absolute fastest player on the planet, I'm also not the slowest, but I do tend to end up not getting to finish at least one game most tournaments now-a-days because I end up being paired up with someone who also isn't the fastest player and/or is also playing a horde army.

I know I can choose to go with some sort of small mech army, but the fact is I HATE that most armies look that way, and I like playing the armies I play and its a shame that so many tournaments effectively punish me for bringing certain army types!

But anyway, that's my feedback. I know that you get plenty of positive feedback for bigger events and I know that most people finish their games, so just consider my comments as some feedback coming from the other perspective.

Good luck with your event!

GamesIPlay "Double Trouble" Event - Aero Hobbies - Santa Monica on Jan 15th

No blood no foul, I appreciate the perspective

Early in our first season we played things a bit looser with the time limits - allowing people to finish their last turns after "time" was called. It worked alright, but when we played our event up at Game Empire Pasadena we ran into issues with the length of the tournament. It seems like LA players just have a different vibe and expectations than the OC and SD players we'd dealt with, and we required a bit of tweaking. Travis (the TO for the store) was helpful and provided a lot of feedback that ultimately helped shape our event structure and rules.

I know horde armies are especially tricky in timed events...totally understand where you're coming from on that. I doubt we'll ever please everyone completely with any event, but maybe we'll look into doing some other tournaments in a different format to allow for some of the armies and play styles that tend to get the short end of the stick currently.

Thanks mang
