Getting into Hordes

Both a friend and I are looking into Hordes, with Mk II being out and the factions updated. That said I’m posting up to ask for advice and information on the game and factions we have chosen. My friend wants to do Legion, and myself well Circle is drawing me. We’ve both looked around at Battle-College and have attained a copy of the main rules along with the Legion book. (The store didn’t have a Circle one, but we are going to try again later to see if they have one.)

As far as armies go I find myself attracted to the Constructs and have read Baldur is good to run with them. The other warcasters I don't really care for any of their models, but Baldur I do like. Is the two of those a competitive tournament worthy force? Also what would be a good starting set of purchases for this, minus the book of course? From what I’ve seen/read I do like the theme list so I’d probably stick with them. So that means things like the Megalith, Druids of Orboros, Druid Stoneward & Woldstalkers, Sentry Stone & Mannikins, Shifting Stones, Blackclad Wayfarer, and Druid Wilder as they are needed for the list.

For my friend while he really likes eThagrosh, rules and background, both he and I have heard a lot about Absylonia. Is she better then eThagrosh? If so, despite the ugly model, my friend says he’ll run her instead as he would rather the better list. He is thinking themed for her, but I don’t have a copy of his list he made from the book. I’ll post it later if I can snag it from him. However I am interested on how competitive she is compared to eThagrosh. Can the dragon avatar be used and win effectively at tournaments? Also I know some units are good with both so those are what me and him are focusing on now. Thins like the Typhon and Shredders.

I would appreciate any and all help that you guys could provide, and thanks in advance.

If you are both just starting I would normally recommend buying the battleboxes, but as you want constructs that will be difficult for you. I would advise your friend to buy the Legion box - it is a good start, although he may not use all the Shredders in the future.

To keep things even, most of the battleboxes are around 11points, so:

Baldur
Woldwarden
Wold Guardian

or 2 Woldwardens

Play some games at this level until you are comfortable with the rules, then you can expand to 15pts and beyond. You may decide by then that you want to try a different caster.

Your friend can start with the box and buy eThags. Start with the box, then swap him in later.

PP aren't very good at taking pictures of their figures, often the look better in the flesh than on the website.

The ethag model looks amazing i purchased it and need to prime it but i am still waiting for my FLGS to get in the legion paint set so until then i am going to prime them and maybe see if there is a different color set i could go with for know and will be purchasing the battlebox this weekend

Automatically Appended Next Post:
for legions get a spawning vassel and acoylates it is useful cause once you get three soul tokens or what ever they are called you can spawn another warbeast so i would run that ethag and prolly a typhon and a few shredders the rest you can spawn when you get enough tokens of what ever the vassel needs and it easily obtains them

spawning vessel is a bad option for beginning with. requiring things to die near it can be dificult to start with. since most starter games are beasts and warlocks mostly i would suggest a forsaken or shepard for the legion player, allowing for lessons in fury manipulation.

get the vessel later if you want.

So eThagrosh is good? Tournament winning good? My friend is very competitive so he naturally wants to win, borders WAAC, but he keeps it in line.

So how do these sound for 12 and 15 point lists?

Legion of Everblight

12 Point
Thagrosh, the Messiah,
Shredder
Shredder
Carnivean

Absylonia, Terror of Everblight
Shredder
Shredder
Shredder
Carnivean

15 point
Thagrosh, the Messiah
Shredder
Shredder
Carnivean
Blighted Nyss Shepherd
The Forsaken

Absylonia, Terror of Everblight
Shredder
Shredder
Shredder
Carnivean
Blighted Nyss Shepherd
The Forsaken

Circle of Orboros
12 point
Baldur the Stonecleaver
Woldguardian
Woldwarden

Or 2 Woldwardens

15 points
Baldur the Stonecleaver
Woldguardian
Woldwarden
Sentry Stone (Leader and 3 Manikins)
