Curious about beastmen

So first I have a quick question. Wasn't there a thread before that people posted fairly brief descriptions of every army and their units?

I really like the gor models which is why I am curious about the beastmen, but would like to know more about the army and more specifically the models I like.

Ungors - meh, not really a big fan.
Gors - the main reason I am interested in the army. Is an all gor army feasible?
Chariots - would be a big fan if they were plastic. Any suggestions on conversions?
Hounds - have their uses

Bestigors - cool models, but not a big fan of $40 for 10 of them. Not sure how well they perform on the table either.
Minotaurs - OK models. What is the best way to arm them?
Centigors - cool concept, not a big fan of the $ or model (I find it strange that all the other models have hooves and they don't ) I would probably use marauder horses with gor bodies. How do they perform on the table as well?
Razorgors - I don't think so.

Actually, I am not really interested in any of the rares, but I guess that is because I don't know anything about them, other than the giants and spawns.

I might start up another thread to describe some of the other armies. I think it would be convenient for anyone new or unfamiliar with certain armies.

A possible chariot conversion would be to use the Celt chariot from WF: 3 chariots for $20, 5 Plastic Boars from GW for $15, and 2 plastic Gor/Ungor for $2.5 each. Would make for a plastic chariot for less than $20 each.

http://www.wargamesfactory.com/wargames-factory-store/celt-chariots

http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat1040021&prodId=prod1290039

Re:Curious about beastmen

For the most part your spot on with what you mention. Though Ungors with spears 40 plus strong can be a good tarpit/attrition unit. All/mostly gors is perfectly feasible and effective. Especially if you field shaman with lore of beasts. Use the signature spell to boost their stats. Chariots are awesome for their cost. Especially tuskgors. 2 or 3 of them working together can be great for combined flank charging. Hounds are pretty much screens to protect your armies advance. Bestigors can be hit and miss at times. Though when they work they can really pack a punch. Minotaurs are one of the armies best units. Some people like to take large amounts of them. I prefer a unit of 6 with additional handweapons. Or 5 with a gorebull with slug skin for extra attacks to bump up combat resolution. Centigors are nice but agreed can be too pricey point and moneywise to make them as viable as the other options. The one rare that stands out is the Ghorgon. Its a combat monster who's only real downside is the chance to take a bolt thrower/cannon ball/stonethrower to the face. Though with the added terrain in 8th you have more chances to deny line of sight on him from artillery.

Beastmen in general are a wave of close combat wave of troops augmented/ supported by combat/magic focused heros and lords. When they hit a good run and get their primal fury rolls passed they can really ruin someones day. But if they get split up/shot down and too many bodies lost before close combat they will have rough times. But otherwise a fun army to play with if you like the theme.

I think there are a few threads from recent months wanting to outline the pros and cons of various armies. Several times. Just look for them in the older pages.

Beastmen need a lot of magic to work IMO, but as Lexx says Lore of Beasts is very handy, particularly as you reduce the casting value by 1 when casting the spells on Beastmen.

Don't knock Ungor raiders by the way. These are your only missile troops (exept for the Cygor and Moonclaw) and it's worth having a unit or two running around weakening the enemy and fouling up marches.

Thanks for the replies and the chariot conversion.

I would probably use ungors over hounds, especially if they had the same cost. I am also a fan of some of those character models for beastmen as well. (Malagor, beastlord, and bray shamans)

How does their ambush rule work and what units are eligible for it?

Re:Curious about beastmen

Well to qualify you need 2 units of the same type (ungor/gors). One unit being bigger than the other. The smaller can ambush. This can be done as long as you have one larger unit for every unit you wish to ambush. So I would need 2 units of over 20 gors to have another 2 units of 20 gors ambushing for instance. The chance of them showing up and on what table edge are randomized. So not a good idea to hinge your strategy on them showing up at a pivotal moment. Though there is a character that improves their chances of showing up when/where you need them. Alot of their characters are fun/have useful rules. Definitely worth looking them all up and seeing if one would suit your potential force to be.

Wow, nice chariot conversion links! Also, you can use hounds to pull the chariots (they look better than boars, imho) and it seems that you might have some. With hounds and those chariots, you could make a lot quite cheaply!

Not that I'm pushinig the chariot spam beastmen list, although it has given me quite a hard time handling it.
