According to fluff, they're a codex chapter, but look at the Marines Codex and you've got sternies with blue helmets, not red or white ones. Fluff also states they paint both fists red to distinguish veterans.

I paint the trim of the shoulderpads red for a more visible difference than both fists, but also use old LotD and BA models that have loads of regalia: laurels, gems, bones, flames, etc. that I also paint crimson.

Cause GW painters don't read the fluff. Several Codex chapters have Terminators and Veterans with white helmets,with the Sargeant of said squads having a white helmet with a red stripe.

With CF's, you've only got a simple system of 1 or 2 red hands - a bit lacking...
