AHW frenzied corsairs with KB would scare plenty of enemies. Then again KB would help most units other than witches and executioners, but they would benefit from the ward or extra attacks. I don't know how you would fit any of those units into your list though. I would probably look at losing at least one bolt thrower and maybe a couple of shades.

Re:2500 Dark Elves

How often do you find a suitable target for your Assassin? It really seems having both him AND a pair of RBTs AND 40 Crossbowmen is pretty overkill on the mixed heavy/light shooting. Shades typically don't have issues taking down a war machine or two unless they're targetted early. If they are targetted early, the Assassin isn't going to survive anyway.

As much as I really do like the model, the RBTs aren't going to add much to the list unless your opponent is monster heavy. Even if they are, your big bolts at long range miss at least half the time anyway, 2/3 of the time if whatever you are shooting at is screened by anything. Cannons and Stone Throwers don't care if you're screened and have both become deadlier in 8th. Bolt Throwers, especially expensive ones like ours, really took a hit with losing +1 to hit Large creatures and the fact that anything can be screened to drop your hit ratio even lower. Unfortunate as it is, there are just better ways to spend your points. I'd trade one for a Chariot and the other for points to be combined with other changes. Of course, I believe Chariots should always be ran in pairs since two is much scarier than one and a double-charge can really break a unit that one would struggle with.

As noted above, the Cauldron is really not picking up its end of the slack. The only thing you're really using it for is a hard-to-kill BSB, but 225 points is quite a bit just for that. I'd probably drop your Dreadlord since his 4 S6 attacks I feel won't be enough to turn the tide against any real threat coming after your blocks. Between his points and the 100 saved from potentially dropping a RBT, you could pick up a block of combat infantry or a second Hydra. Either one I feel would help your list more than one RBT and the Dreadlord. Alternatively, you could save some points by switching to a Master with Crimson Death. You lose an attack and your regen armor, but with your other characters and the unkillable BSB I think your opponent has better targets for sniping and you save a fair bit.

So dropping the Dreadlord, Bolt Throwers, and Assassin (I figure with 9 of them even a hellcannon shouldn't be standing after a volley). I added in some Corsairs and another Chariot, which leaves me 229 points left - which leaves me with enough for one more unit.

Lords

S.
I'm honestly tempted to try out the Handbows + Frenzy banner that has gained in popularity lately. It looks reallyneat since it gives you the initial volley that can fire on the move (now that Frenzy isn't that big a deal any more) and a nasty stand-and-shoot while retaining two attacks each in combat. Going with that method, I'd probably leave them as a block of 20 to walk about as 2x10 for maximum shots and reform once combat hits.

None of my regular opponents use Lore of Death and I always keep my Pegasus Sorceress away from things that can cause toughness tests so I typically just go with the Pendant instead of the Talisman on her. It's just as good against S3 and better against anything higher. Of course, if you find yourself fending off strengthless attacks that allow ward saves take the Talisman every time.

I like the Darkstar Cloak and Seal of Ghrond combo, adds a nice little boost to the Winds. If you find the extra dispel die from the Seal doesn't come into play often enough, you can also try out the Guiding Eye for that turn you really want your Crossbowmen to hit their target. Also be sure not to forget about the +1 to-hit spell in Metal for them, but also don't forget about fun things like the Fire spell that not only makes them flaming but gives them (or those Corsairs) +1 to wound. Erasing anything relying on its toughness or regen in one volley is fun since you can wound them on 5's instead of 6's. Even elves dislike that spell since your double-tapping Crossbows/Handbows kill Swordmasters on 3's instead of 4's. Oooo.... handbow Corsairs would be a MEAN response to Swordmasters. They wouldn't even see it coming!

I would try to find one more point so I could fit in another hydra and 5 harpies. Like Kirb will verify, what is better than one hydra... two hydras. Actually, I think the harpies were the unit I was really want to put in. I think they would add value to your list as redirectors/harassers/screeners/fodder.

I am planning on running my corsairs with handbows too.

I'll have to give that a try. I usually wind up having to play against WoC so Metal is a necessary evil most days. I have used Fire for that effect on Xbows but not Corsairs.

If hydras had a cheaper model I would be running 2 of them. Would another unit of Corsairs be a bad idea (one with bows one with AHW)?

Regarding the expensive Hydra model, check out Reaper's Reptus Hydra. You can find it on discount sites for $30 - $35 shipped, then use some spare movement tray for the base and Corsair or Warrior bits for beastmasters.
My kitbashed beastmasters have corsair legs and left arms, warrior torsos and champion right arms, COK heads (one each of the unhelmeted ones), spears in the left hands replacing... whatever weapon was there from a Reaper weapons pack, and (heh heh heh) whips in the right arm.

I left the pommels on the swords (they roughly match the spikes on the handles of the real beastmaster's whips) but replaced the blades with some fairly large-diameter brass rod from the largest of the P3 pinning kits. Yes, the whole rod, bent into suitable cuves. One whole rod, each. I used Green Stuff to attack the end of a DE spear onto the end and to smooth over the change in size.

Sure, it lacks the various scaley hide wraps the original beastmasters have, although one more skilled in GS could correct that. But they look good enough to keep up with a hydra!
