You can do some nice work on legion beasts with only washes since they are entirely organic.
You can simplify that brushthralls tutorial just by going from steps 1 to 3 then skip the blending on the brown and go straight from black>scorched brown>graveyard earth.

For a lava scheme it would really depend on exactly what you were lookng for from the models. you could do a nice warm/fiery scheme with many of the same tchniques shown in the brushthralls tutorial with substituted colors.
prime white, paint it all yellow, a thin orange wash over the whole thing, a gw red wash, then re-hilight with yellow. for a cool lava look on the scales try making a blood red wash over them and get it in all the crevices, but be careful not to mess up your yellow skin. after the red wash dries paint black over the scales and just avoid the deepest cracks so they stay red then drybrush the very edges of the black with gray(again, avoid messing up your yellow).
You could do a whole carnivean without too much trouble using all those washes as long as you kept good brush control. And dont think that's the only way to do it either, you could do all kinds of fiery color combinations.

Which brings me again to say TRY IT. Have one model try your ideas out on it, take pictures, if you dont like it strip the paint and try again using photos as references. Repeat this process till you got something your happy with. Im not to sure what you wanna do with the lava. If you want them to look like cooling lava, look up the balrog painting tut on GW's site. If you want them glowing as the bases are lava look for force lighting tuts. If you want them glowing red hot look for bloodthirsters/bloodletters ive seen a few painted to look white hot. Your doubts are the only thing holding you back.

Or am I just weird?

Everblight seems to be all about pale, so I would say pick a pale color that you like -- white, light blue, sickly purply pink and then find an ink that matches up good with that base color. Paint the whole thing in the base tone (over a white primer), and then wash the living daylights out of that sucker. Then, if you are feeling up to it, go back and paint the base color back onto stuff like the top of the head and the shoulders and anything else that would be lit by a light coming from above. Paint the teeth white and possibly put a contrasting color on some of the armor detail -- bang. Shouldn't take more than an hour (and probably a lot less).

Paint scheme for legion of everblight

Well, fluffwise legion comes from the snowy bits. BUT, Everblight is a dragon(one of corruption etc but who cares), and all the warbeasts are actually dragonspawns, that's why I wanted to go with a lava/fire scheme.

And dais, thanks for the tips Hadn't really thought of going wash heavy yet, All I use washes for is badab black for shadows, and soot on my deffkopta's.

What washes would you suggest for the fiery scheme? Cause if I can do that with mostly washes, it should be doable. All I've tried so far is just the way they paint lava bases, and I just suck to much at that. XD

Btw, what do you mean by make a wash?XD you can make washes?XD

I was wondering, if I go with the fiery scheme, what would you suggest for the Nyss clothes, skin etc? (Nyss are the elves that are the standard troops for this army for those who don't know about them)

Also, can't wait till Anyssa Ryvaal comes out, I love the raptors and this solo is just stunning!

you can indeed make washes. one of the more popular recepies is from les bursley(sp) and he made a video here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEkMnP6p08I

you can make a wash out of any normal paint too, but it dosent have the same transparency or intensity as ink. I just use paint, matte medium, and water for most of my washes and mix them right there on the pallet.

any art store should have it. acrylic matte medium costs about $6-10 for a jar that is entirely too large to be practical for miniature painting and will last years if you take care of it. the same sort of places will have your flow aid and maybe ink as well.
if you dont have anywhere nearby you can try an online art store like dickblick.
there are also a couple of nice relevant articles on coolminiornot that are relevant to washes and glazes.

I say you should give the lava theme a try. I actually went with a lava-ish paint scheme on my own legion! Im not the best painter and I was able to pull off what I was going for, so I definitely think you should try it.

Heres the first carnivean I painted for it.
I haven't painted them in an extremely long time so I don't remember exactly how I did it. But the "rocky" areas were all just drybrushing. The skin iirc was a mix scab red and black as a base coat, then just highlighting all the raised areas as shown. I believe I started the highlights with strait scab red and did multiple highlights (always making sure to leave the last one showing some) working up to blazing orange mixed with bleached bone (I might have even gone to strait bleached bone but it doesn't look like it).

If you have a steady hand it can be done quite easily, that was the first one I painted, and the first time I ever tried to highlight something so it was somewhat messy, but with time and practice it started to come out alot better, especially on the Typhon due to the way its skin is.
