2000pt OnG tournament

Here's what I'll be playing:

Black ork warboss
Shaga's, amulet of protectyness - 220pt

Lv 4 orc shaman - 215pt

NG shaman lv 1
Staff sneaky stealin' - 100pt

Gobbo boss BSB
light armour, spider banner - 112pt

50 NG
bows, 2 fanatics, nets, full command 255pt

36 black orcs
full command, mork spirit totem 556pt

14 savage big'uns
full command, add. choppa
Noggs banner 251pt

2xSquig herd 60pt

1xOrc chariot 80pt

1xDoom diver 80pt

1xRock lobba 70pt

The list has obvious weaknesses like a goblin BSB, the lack of a proper dedicated anvil unit, mostly naked characters, etc. but I wanted to test the bow NG with the spider banner as well as savage orcs (which I finished painting just this weekend), so it's not really meant to be overly competitive.

2000pt OnG tournament

Congrats, you've made the not overly competitive list you were looking for.

3 infantry blocks is not enough, especially with O&G.

It looks like you can't decided a direction; black orcs, big uns and level 4 looks like a waaaagh list, but shooters, and warmachines don't really match that. Waaaagh will put you in combat pretty fast, so you won't get as much utility out of the shooting.

If you want to do the poison thing(it's not that great), it's better to support the shooting block with more night goblins. More fanatics will slow incoming charges.
Also, adding a few fighting goblin heroes really makes those goblin blocks worth it. 2 goblin heroes with great weapons (34 pts each), gives them decent hand to hand ability.

-Matt

2000pt OnG tournament

Night Goblin units make great anvils, in my opinion. I think you've got some good things going on here, but I think Matt is right about army purpose.

The BSB makes me nervous, seeing as how important he is, with no magical protection. But if you want to try it, then try it, I say.

The other characters do feel bare. Why not take a regular orc general with that amulet? Your armour save will be the same (whatever your opponent's is), and you'll save a fair chunk of points for -1WS.
But I digress; I think this list would benefit more as a mostly goblin list. A level 4 and a level 2 gob shaman will give you all the spells of the Little Waaagh! (which, aside from Waaagh! and Bash 'em, Lads! of the Big Waaagh!, is probably a better list anyway). A few gob Big Bosses (two/block?) would help their fighting ability, and, most importantly, improve the chances of keeping your BSB alive.

I'd drop the orc blocks for some cheaper orc blocks, if you want some hand-to-hand when they get to you. The chariot too feels out of place. An extra lobba, and maybe a spear chukka or two to kill gribblies would serve you well. Also, more goblins.

Here's a suggestion: it's gimmicky and I have no idea if it would work, but I'll throw it out there:

a goblin Warboss with the Folding Fortress, a goblin Warboss (the army general), with the Periapt of Preservation and the Crown of Command for a survivable and Stubborn general.

Then, a big ol' unit of Night Goblins with Bows and Nets to go in the Fortress with the Spider Banner BSB and two other Big Bosses to keep him alive. That's an average of 40 wounds against T3 troops with a 4+ save in the shooting phases (long range, short range, charge reaction), and then you could give 'em a -1S in combat with 6 S6 attacks and 4 S3 attacks (all poisoned), and be Stubborn if you lose.

It's just a really weird idea that popped into my head, and it was too funny not to share with a goblin general.

Re:2000pt OnG tournament

Well, in the end I tried a few of your suggestions and played:

45 NG lancers, full command, nets, 2 fanatics
40 arches, full command, nets, 2 fanatics
25 black orcs
12 savage big 'uns

goblin bsb, spider standard
goblin warboss, amulet, martog basha
orc lv4 shaman horn ugrok, power stone
goblin lv2 shaman sneaky staff
orc big boss, shaga's

lobba, doom diver

The list did great against skavens (poisoned arrows did great, and the nets+poisoned attacks while flanking the unit held by the lancer gobbos worked as a charm).

However, I received a severe spanking and a not-so-severe spanking at the hands of two WoC armies based around chosen ones with 3+ ward saves and two warshrines.

On the first one I zeroed on the first turn with the lobba on one of the warshrines, opp failed ward save and got a 5 on the wounds dice. That's when luck ran out, on the 2nd turn the orc shaman exploded and the close gobbo archers failed the ld test and ran (yes, with the BSB and warboss leadership), on the following turn they failed to regroup and ran away. On that battle I managed to get the warshrine, a few barbarians the opp bought just to make the minimum core requirement and a small unit of hounds.

On the second, very similar one, (only a single chosen ones unit, more barbarians and a lv4 tzeench mage on a disk) i managed to kill off both barbarian units, headbutt to death (I was lucky my opponent failed quite some ward saves) the mage and reduce both chosen one units below 50% strength, but no dice, I didn't manage to win a single combat round even with flanking units, spell-powered units, etc. He won by pure attrition and I ended the game with just one warmachine and the goblin shaman.

I am facing the same opponent next week on a league game at 2500 pt. This was my first time against chaos in 8th (well, 7th as well for that matter, I usually just play against skaven, empire, bretonnia and HE).

I don't know what to put, but I'll sure add every ward-negating magic item I can get my hands on.

Against that gimmicky trick, yeah, there's not a whole lot to do. Powerful magic and shooting is the only real way to go with O&G against the 3+ Chosen. Lots of Lobbas, lots of Foots, and hopefully a Waaagh! in there somewhere; double fanatics won't do as much, but they will do something (5-6 wounds...?).

2000pt OnG tournament

I wonder what will be more effective.

Trolls can be quite durable with 4+ regen and 3 wounds, but in the end the WoC dish out more attacks. What's the point cost of chosen ones with 3+ ward?

I was thinking 6 river trolls (so that at least the WoCs hit on 4s). I'm (literally) toast if he takes the flaming banner, though.

Seeing as he has no shooting I thought about adding a warboss on wyvern with a ward-negating magic item, and something that gives ASF or a potion of speed for a 1st turn boost. He would be a shrine and mage-hunter, and eventually flank the chosen ones.

Double fanatics did exactly 1 non-warded wound each pair, so nothing to write home about.

2000pt OnG tournament

I will hazard somewhere around 550-600pts for a 30-man unit with no characters and the Wailing Standard or whatever.

Let's see...the trolls would do an average of 2.3 wounds. The Chosen would do an average of 5.5 wounds. Rough stuff.

I have two possible suggestions: one is that you get a lot of Rock Lobbas. A lot. The other is that you push one big block of gobs right up his nose, and give 'em a sharp wheel the turn before he charges, and hopefully tie the unit up for two or three turns, and make it was another one or two coming back at you. By then, it hopefully won't be able to make up it's own points.
