Inspiration and Advice for making Battlefield Statues...

Dear Dakka,
I am away for a while but I took some HH series books with me. I want to do some pre-heresy models as the "Defenders of the Imperium" e.g. Saul Tarvitz, Garviel Loken, Iacton Qruse, Nathaniel Garro etc. I have been inspired by the work of TAGSTA below.

What I want to do is convert my own versions of these models and place them on stone columns. I want to paint the miniature and the column all the same or possibly one bronze and the pillar stone. Does anyone have any good advice for stone effects (I am looking for a "Portland" Stone effect rather than Marble or granite. Also do statues look better in Bronze than Stone? If so I will Boltgun metal the Models and wash them 10 x with Gryphonne Sepia, how about a copper Green finish like you get on aged copper roofs etc?
My aim is to have 6 or statues I can place on the battlefield or use them to create an "Avenue of Heroes" in my city battles.

My 1st aim is to buy the Older Mk4 Armour from FW so I have a good start to base my conversions on. Any advice would be welcome!

EDIT - Found this, and it is the exactly the kind of effect I am looking for! Are weathering powders worth using?

For the aged bronze effect just give the bronze colored model a very thinned out wash of scaly green. It works wonder in giving that aged verdigris feel.
