Paint and Play Challenge- a 2K WoC List in 90 days!

My local gaming club is sponsoring a "2K Paint and Play Challenge." (check it out at http://leagueofgamers.iboards.us/viewtopic.php?t=48 .) The basics are: Build an army, and have them no more than primed by Jan 15th. Starting on the 15th, you can paint (or keep building if needed) to your heart's content, with your first game being played in February- and there's a penalty for unpainted models. There's also a painting score to be evaluated at the very end. So... 2 week run-up, 3 games a month for 3 months, and then the painting eval.

I'm going with a themed Warriors of Chaos army, which will actually be the base of my GT list. Here's what I've got....

Vilitch is the general and centerpiece to the army... the concept is pretty much themed around him. I tried to make him as true to the illustration as I could, without requiring a ton of sculpting.

Cailidin, the Dark Acolyte. In the 2500 version he's also marked, but for now, the Lore of Fire will have to do. The Infernal Puppet he carries is actually a Warmaster Empire Wizard model.

Adarc the Exalted, my BSB on a disc. The disc is made from 2 flying bases and an old Epic 60mm "wafer" base, with the skaven plague furnace tail and a lot of plasticard.

This guy isn't actually a character in my list per se.... he's a spell token! This is my Call to Glory spell token. He'll actually be OSL'ed from the crack in the ground beneath him, which should be fun to try to do!

That's the characters, onto the specials.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Onto my Chosen of Tzeentch- a unit so brick hard I don't expect much will take them out at 2K. (20 Chosen, Full Command, Blasted Standard, and Collar of Tzeentch... er, khorne... ) Each of these models is a character in their own right, a lot of conversion and bits and trophies, both on their belts and their bases.

My front rank. I'm really happy with the way the Blasted Standard came out... that dude in any other army could be a BSB!

Ranks 2 through 4. You'll probably notice a bunch of guys are headless. I'm picking up the bits order of the Chosen heads from my local GW today (Shout out to Antonio "Wildman" Cumba at Cottman! WOOT!) so will have them finished and primed before tonight is over.

Here's the block in all their Tzeentchy goodness.

Next post will by my Chariot o' doom.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
The Chariot of DOOOOOOM! I wanted to use the stock chariot body.... but wanted it to be very Tzeentchian in nature. I also definitely wanted to replace the guys in it.

One thing I'm really happy with is that the Chariot will pull triple duty. The back warrior is magnetized, allowing me to field it as a regular (?) chariot, a character's mount, and a Warshrine just by changing what's in the back. The pictures don't quite do this one justice right now... it's a bit busy to photograph well unpainted I think.

That fleshes out the Specials, onto to core choices now.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Core Units: I only have two, but they're going to look sick.

The Command Rank for my Marauders. The detail on the musician is hard to see, but he's one of my favorite models in the list. I'll do a closeup on him as he's more painted.

Here's the full block. To give them the "hardened veteran" look Vilitch's army is supposed to have, I gave them all dual pauldrons on the shoulders, as well as the gauntletted hands and weapons from the Warriors. They will get Warrior shields as well.

My front five for the Warriors. I really like the way the Banner of Eternal Flame is coming out, as well as my Champion for the unit.... a plastic homage to the Nurgle Champion model.

The full block, 20 strong. Much like the Marauders, my Warrirors have been kitted up- they have Knight helms and weapon arms, and will have Knight shields.

Re:Paint and Play Challenge- a 2K WoC List in 90 days!

As far as being easy to snipe.... he's got a 2+/3+ save, so as easy as it looks.

Even as big as he is, I'm good at maneuvering him around terrain. Yes, it's always a risk, but I've found he is incredible as machine hunting, and can even do some good damage in combat in the right circumstances unsupported. (Last game, for example, he hit a unit of 5 Kurgle Knights in the flank.... Won combat four four player turns straight, the entire time within 12" of my main battle line, and impossible to shoot at. )

In bigger lists (2,500 and such) he's not on the disc.... then I have enough points to send a naked Exalted in on that chore, and he's walking in the blocks.

Yeah but the thing is I don't understand why you would bother to upgrade him to a BSB if your only going to use him as a hunter/soloer? You could just skipp the points for BSB and use him as a ordinary champion with disc. At least imho it's not worth having a BSB if your not gonna use him as one.
Re:Paint and Play Challenge- a 2K WoC List in 90 days!

Oh, I get what you mean, totally. I look at it as 25 points spent on contingency (or, 50 points spent on contingency if you think of the disk as contingency instead of the BSB.)

If my opponent brings war machines, or small swift flanking units, the disc BSB becomes the hunter, and with his volume of attacks and +2 or +3 to cr first round (charge, BSB, usually flank) he either wins or dies- and the 2+/3+ makes the second one unlikely, even more so if he can challenge. With that target or pair of targets destroyed, he can clear back to the line in a single turn to rejoin the battle and perform normal BSB dues, where a "regular exalted" on a disc would be of limited value turns four through six.

If my opponent brings none and just tries to fight toe to toe, the maneuverability of the Disc allows me to make sure that he is always hitting a flank in the fight I want him in, giving a +2 to that combat instead of the +1 if he was in the front rank. Additionally, if he hits the side and charges, he's usually taking out a supporting attack that now has no valid target (unless my opponent is smart enough to move the challengee to the second rank.)

So long as he remains within 12" of my elements, he's performing all his BSB duties, since the only unit on the table that he could possibly give a leadership bonus to would be the Marauders, and they generally have the wizard in there anyway.

He's a study in multipurposing and misdirection: He looks easier to kill than he is, is more mobile and maneuverable than one would expect for a BSB, is never more than 1 round away from helping with LD tests, and can solo in a fight better than my opponent is going to realize.

Try it sometime in a friendly game or two, just for kicks. It takes a little bit to figure out how he works, but once learned he works very effectively.

Hmm I see the uses for him now. It sounds pretty darn good if you get it to work! I could try it with a noble on a great eagle then, it would be the closest equal for high elves. I might do it some time, nice to have a bit of tacts discusion!

::LOL:: actually, my High Elves is where I did it first... I got kinda addicted to heroes and lords on eagles... especially heroes, since in this edition it gives him an extra attack, an extra wound, and flight effectively. The Disc-BSB-Hunter-Flanker-Thing is a slightly more durable in Toughness, one wound smaller version of the same critter. He's a great utility piece.

Doing some work moving things around in my paint area today, but I'll hopefully have some posts of the chariot and the marauders tonight/tomorrow. They're not fully painted but fully basecoated at least, and starting to look gooood....
