Dwarf Lord with Rune of Kingship

Last few years I have been out of gaming due to family commitments and such. Only played fantasy a couple of times before that and now i am able to play it a tad bit more. I have been finding out more and more how a dwarf lord decked out with the right runes can pretty much outlast most lord choices out there. However i have been toying with the idea with a dwarf lord with a rune of kingship. Here is what i have in mind

Dwarf Lord
-Great Weapon
-Talisman: Rune of Kingship
-Armour: Rune of Preservation (I cant remeber if there are armies out there that can specifically pick out a character and kill it with killing blows)

or

Dwarf Lord
-Great Weapon
-Talisman: Rune of Kingship
-Armour: (none)
-Weapon: Rune of Kragg the Grimm, Rune of Burning

In the same unit he will have a Thane (shield bearer) with him to accept challenges

Thane
-Shield
-Talisman: Master Rune Spite
-Armour: Rune of Preservation, Rune of Stone
-Weapon: Rune of Striking

Idea is to stick them with a group of Ironbreakers with a runic banner (Rune of Battle, Rune of Determination). The Thane can take challenges being hard to hit with a high weapon skill and hard to wound with the nice armour save and ward save. If he should go down the gatekeeper would pick up the next challenge. While they are accepting challenges the Dwarf Lord is hitting troops with a high weapon skill, decent number of attacks, and high strength against the troops causing wounds to help with combat resolution. Nearby in another unit would be the army standard banner with (Master Rune Stromni, Rune of Gaurding -not sure how good this is now-, Ancestral Rune). Probably with a block of Longbeards.

Dwarf Lord with Rune of Kingship

I think you could play with the kingship builds but right now I just find it to be too expensive. There is a common item that picks up stubborn for a mere 35 points. We can't get it, and it's a pretty good bargain at that price, but it still kind of indicates that 100 points may be a bit over the top. My other concern is that it sacrifices too much durability to get there.

The Dwarf Lord suddenly becomes even more important to drop (in order to remove his stubborn item) and just isn't that tough. Your build is 4+ save immune to poison and killing blow, or a 2+ if you put him on shield bearers (you should).

Having said all this, I think the idea is a very cool idea (i.e. the dwarf lord and Thane shieldbearer (body guard). I don't know that you'll get much mileage in any environment where lists are being built for maximum competitiveness, but in "softer" environments, you could have fun.

If I had to pick a build, that included a great weapon and MR of Kingship, I'd go with shieldbearers and the rune of resistance for a 2+ re-rollable to make sure you don't get dropped by schmoes.

RZ

Dwarf Lord with Rune of Kingship

I'm with Zeke. The flaming rune is really only useful if you want to play monsterhammer. I could see taking a flaming non-great weapon, so that your lord will burn anything with regen so that the troops can slap it. On balance, though, I think if you're assuming MRo Kingship, shieldbearers and a shield are practically mandatory for maximum armor save, and then go with resistance.

I also think this rune is too expensive to be worth it, particularly in a world that includes steadfast. Dwarf lords are *the* priority target in any army they show up in, and need to be tooled for survival.

Re:Dwarf Lord with Rune of Kingship

I would agree with the others. I just don't see the value in it when a lord in a hammerer unit would be stubborn and immune to fear and terror without spending the points on kingship. The only other unit I would consider using it with would be ironbreakers to get the better AS, but you would be losing str. 6 attacks.
