Mr.Malevolents W.I.P.

Hello fellow Dakka Dakkaites (?) and welcome to my W.I.P. blog,

I've been a LONG time lurker and finally decided to take the leap and start a W.I.P. blog. I haven't actually played a game in well over 4 years so this is my comeback tour of sorts. I had recently acquired a Battle For Black reach box set and after staring at its contents for a month or so I went ahead and started to paint. For the Space Marines I chose Salamanders and for my Orks I chose Bad Moons. I've gotten a good start on the marines so far, only lacking a bit on the Ork front due to entering a painting competition on bolterandchainsword for my Salamanders. Both armies will be painted with white undercoats as my last attempts with black have left me kind of sour on darker armies for now. Wihtout further rambling I present my first Bad Moon Slugga Boy.....

Front

Back

Side

I only have a little bit of work left on him and he will be done. Just have to highlight the black and finish the base. There is still 19 more Sluggas, Warboss, 5 Nobz and 3 Deffcoptas left. Now for the Salamanders. I used a technique developed by dakkadakka's own GreyDeath involving Tamiya Light Green spray on my Salamanders as the first basecoat. I then washed and worked my way back to a suitable bright green and added battle damage. I chose to represent them as 2nd Company by painting their right knee pads yellow as per standard Codex organization. Hope you all like...

First Salamander Front

First Salamander Back

First Salamander Left

First Salamander Right

Sergeant and Salamander #2

I would also like to mention that over time I will be adding random minis to here as I see it as my "anything goes" blog. I have some scenery from Battle For Maccrage calling my name so you may see that here soon as well. I'll also keep you guys posted on my upcoming battle this Sunday (using the Salamanders and Bad Moon Orks). We both have not played in forever so its kind of our trial by fire. I hope you've enjoyed venturing onto my blog and any comments and concerns for the above minis is very much appreciated.

Mr.Malevolent

I also re-discovered my first bitz box during the move so I can tell you I will definitely have a lot of random W.I.P. stuff to show you in the coming days (as soon as I get settled of course). I had intended to not continue my Salamanders but after looking them over I'm giving them another go and I can say with confidence you will see more of them to come, along with more Orks, Noise Marines, some Pre-Heresy stuff, Vostroyans, and some other awesome random stuff. Thanks for watching and I'll be back A.S.A.P.

Re:Mr.Malevolents W.I.P.

Not a very quick update....sorry.

However, I bring you pictures of some of my projects (they were with my phone as my digital camera needs a good charging). I'm in the process of finding/changing my current job so I've had to dig into my old minis and give them a re-working. First I had originally intended to re-work my old Tau army for my wife but after playing through the Dawn of War: Dark Crusade Campaign mode as the Tau, I've gotten the Tau bug back. Plus I've always had a thing for them So first up is my current state of the Tau force soon to be in the colors of the standard T'au Sept.

Army so far

I have two 10 man Fire Warrior Squads, a squad of 3 Stealth Suits, a Commander (on a crappy base), and a random Crisis Suit and a Devil Fish in pieces. I plan on just re-painting all the FW's and re-basing them in a desert scheme complete with some cacti and bushes. I've decided for the standard T'au Sept colors because I just always liked that scheme. The Commander definitely needs a new base as he seems to topple over with a small gust of wind, this is due to me half assing the base I'm also going to give that Crisis Suit a more dynamic pose.

Next we have a Vostroyan First Born Guardsman I'm 80% finished with. I've awlways had an obbsession with these guys and back during the Medusa V campaign I bought a full Regiment. I only primed them and they sat in a box for a long time. I recently pulled one out and gave a go at the standard color scheme of brass and red.

I like it so far. I plan on adding some sweet snow piles to the base once I finish him. I'm thinking of going the baking soda route. Like I said theres a full regiment of these guys in a box along with some a regiment of Steel Legion AND two Leman Russes that need some extra TLC.

Then we come to my W.I.P. Knights of Blood. For the longest time I couldn't decide on the Chapter for these guys as I worked on them. I was going to go with Marine Malevolent but they follow the Nikea Edict and so do not include any Librarians (and I have two that I would love to use) so they were out. Then I thought maybe Blood Angels, but I couldn't do a standard BA army or amy favorite, Flesh Tearers as I wanted something different, something you don't see very much at all. Then I read up on the Knights of Blood and TADA! I have a Chapter and I get to be both Loyalist and Renegade which I believe fits my Initiates like a glove.

First are my current HQ choices, a Chaplain and a Librarian. I know the Chaplains backpack looks a little off but I'll fix it before I finish (plus I'm adding rivets to his leg armour and shoulder.

Then we have the first squad. Their about 80% done. I noticed after I took pictures, that I'm actually missing an Initiate leaving the squad at 9 strong. I could've swore I finished that 10th guy..... And yes I haven't drilled the bolters yet, my current drill bit is too large

If you can tell, I repositioned most of the legs to give them that walking look. I cant stand the legs spread wide pose that the Tactical squads are given. I much prefer the scanning/walking look (and a few running ). The single marine was the first one I converted to a walking pose and I believe shows it very well. However I think I failed on the grenade toting marine. He was supposed to look as though he was about to chuck the live grenade....

Let me know what you think about the pose....

So that's it so far. Let em know what you guys think. Thanks

Edit: There is a 9th marine in the squad pic, hes just hidden behind the Sergeant
Edit Edit: Uploaded the pics to DakkaDakka to help anyone who cant see photobucket pics.

Quick Update

Managed to paint a Tactical Marine to about 85% completion, even with this insane humidity here in Buffalo. There are a few firsts on this guy. One- I took a shot at OSL on the eyes and I'm very happy with the results. Two- I did some small details like squad badges and the Chapter symbol. The Chapter symbol came out a bit cock-eyed but I'll be able to save it with a few well placed brush edits.

Close up of the knee pad

Close up of the OSL I tried. Im actually really happy with it.

Squad badge close up

Now since I'm going with a desert wasteland base scheme, I'm somewhat stumped on what to do color wise with the ram skull on his base (I also managed to sneak a few skulls in here and there on a few of their bases, even more when I can afford to pick up a box o' skulls from e-bay). I don't want it to become a huge focal point and detract (?) from the Initiate. Any suggestions would be very appreciated. Thanks for looking.

Edit: Uploaded pics to DakkaDakka

Small Update
I'm back and I figured I would show you guys the size of my Knights of Blood army so far (with a few little additions). This is all from my bits box.

I have a full Tactical Squad, a 5 man Assault Squad with no jump-packs, 2 Rhinos/Razorbacks, 2 Dreadnaughts (soon to become Furioso when I can get my hands on the arm bits), a Predator Destructor/Baal Pattern (again if I can get the bits soon), 1 of 2 Chaplains (the other one I just found about half an hour ago), a Librarian, and the bits to make a Sanguinary Priest.

I finished the second Initiate of the Tactical Squad.

...and of course the two Initiates together for a quick finished group shot (his bolter wasn't attached at the time of the photo shoot)...

I also managed to start working on one of the Rhino/Razorbacks interior...

I'll be adding lots of trophy racks, random accessories and of course loose wires and broken tech inside to emphasis on the Renegade Berzerker theme.

Also I started working on a group of Bloodletters I've had since they first released them in plastic (along with 5 OOP Flesh Hounds and a Nurgle Daemon Prince). I've decided that even though the big bad Grey Knights are all the rage right now, I see something crazy cool about an all daemon army and of course have started on the path to creating a full army.

Let me know what you guys think.
Re:Mr.Malevolents W.I.P.

@Gitsplitta: Thank you so very much! I'm glad you like the Bloodletter as much as I do. Theres seven more where that came from

@nerdfest09: I'm at a loss my friend. So many nice things you've said.....Thank you so very much. The encouragement I get from you all is what keeps me going. I have a confession with the Bloodletter, washes are my friend haha. And yeah, I seem to be in this trend army colour wise, black to red. I just cant seem to get away from red. At least the daemons will get me to paint other colours and have a nice vibrant army, that and if I can sell my Goblin army I'll go for a Brettonian army and go even more wild with colour! And since you asked about the Vostroyans, no paint yet but I do have an old model to add to that growing army....

First update involves my Knights of Blood.

Tactical squad is now officially ready for a good undercoating... as soon as the weather breaks again :(

Tactical Squad

New Veteran Sergeant with power fist

As you can see I fashioned up a new Vet Sergeant for them, complete with bigger Termie PF. I felt the current one had more motion to it and would be more at home with the Assault squad. His hip is finished, just not when I took the picture. I definitely like the new Vet and he seems to fit a lot better with the walking pose of the advancing Tactical squad then the other. I also added a few bits and bobs to a few marines, like a re-fill flamer tank and a few bayonets. I also replaced the arm on the "Grenade Chucker" Marine. He looks a lot better now me thinks.

Bayonet

Flamer re-fill tank

Grenade chucker

Now a new squad I just finished last night(besides attaching backpacks).

Assault squad

Veteran Sergeant close-up

Assault Marine 1

Assault Marine 2

Assault Marine 3 with larger berzerker chainsword

Assault Marine 4 at full run

Next up is my 95% done Sanguinary Priest (have to fill a spot on the right shoulder pad that tore off while transferring to the new arm). Hes going to be a pain in the arse for whoever I face with my patrol list (Feel No Pain and Furious Charge for the win!!) I decided I liked the effectiveness of the lightning claw versus a normal power sword. I'm leaning more toward the splattered with blood and gore look, meaning his armour will be white but awash with the blood of the Emperor's enemies!

Found this guy last night. He'd been missing his arm for a while, but I finally reunited them. Hes going in the Vostroyan army somehow once I give him a good going over.

Commisar
That is it for now.
Yay, more stuff! :-) I really like what you've done with the giant power fist! it actually looks pretty darn good on him! the poses are cool as well, this is going to be a sweet looking army when you get a few more painted up! you have a nice mix of agressive looking weapons and poses without the conversions becoming too 'chaos-y'

good job Mr Mal, keep it up!

Nerdfest09

@Yggdrasil: Oh my bad The red is fairly simple and its all GW paints as well.

1)Couple thin layers of Mechrite Red. I find the Foundation Paints to be horrible with drying times and they definitely need a good thinning to get a nice coat down and to keep them from chalking up on you.
2)A couple thin coats of Red Gore.
3)Then extreme highlights of Blood Red.
4)If your feeling adventurous you can add another tiny extreme highlight of Blazing Orange.
5)Then wash with Gryphonne Sepia. Mix with a slight amount of water before applying.
6)And a final application of Devlan Mud to the corners and in the case of clothing, the folds.
Hope that helps!

@nerdfest09: Glad you like the PF's. I used Termie ones as they are quite larger then your standard Tactical size. I've always had a thing for making PF's HUGE! Glad you like the assault squad as well. There will be plenty more in the future

Oh also does anyone know where I can get a good deal on some used Sisters of Battle? Or if anyone here has some they would like to trade for oh maybe 500 Night Goblins? I dont care if the paint is horrible, I just want to get some as the new WD Codex comes out.

One Vostroyan and one Knight of Blood Initiate. Both are half way done. I tried a different basecoat method for the silver on both minis and I'm quite happy with how it worked out. I've been chipping away at two old Leman Russ' that need alot of TLC. I'll post some pics of those and where I'm at over the weekend.

Random Vostroyan

Random Knight of Blood Initiate

I noticed the silver on the KoB seems a bit sloppy but I think once hes in a large 10 man unit he'll blend in just fine I'll make a few adjustments on the next one I paint.
