I have to go for Matt Smith; I was a huge fan of Sylvester Mcoy but didn't watch the new series until Tennant. He was okay, quite funny. I went back and watched some of Chirstopher Eccleston and quite frankly I just found I wanted to slap him and shout... 'act!'... but thats just a personal preference.

I was initually horrified with the choice of Matt and was more than once heard to grumble about it, then I actually watched the first episode with him in it and he has since become my favorite.

IMHO, the Doctors are really divided into the "Original (1-3)Doctors", the "Classic Doctors" (4-8) and the "Modern Doctors". (9-11)

Of the classic doctors, I've always liked Pertwee's ass kicking third doctor - probably the most physically ass kicking doctor of all time.

For me, Tom Baker is the greatest of the "Classic Doctors"... in sheer over-the-top awesomeness. He had the ridiculous scarf and that crazy toothy grin. Davidson comes in second, with McCoy third, Colin Baker fourth and McGann bringing up the rear as the 8th doctor is no more than a footnote in the Who-verse.

Modern doctor wise - I used to be a huge Tennant fan but his 10th doctor was decending into self parody towards the end... especially in the season of 4 specials. The inclusion of Catherine Tate in series 3 certainly didn't improve my view of the show. Eccleston's 9th doctor suffers for only being the doctor for one season, so for the modern doctors, it'd have to be Smith's 11th doctor. I was very impressed with how he came across as "everyone's-favorite-grandpa-in-the-body-of-a-young-man".
-edit- Its not that Tennat is a bad actor, just that Steven Moffat is a MUCH better writer than Russel T. Davis. (No knock on Davis though, he did a helluva job rebooting the franchise.)

Sooo... for top 3, it is very hard to pick between Baker and Smith for top spot... Karen Gillan tie-breaks for me, as she's smokin hot... so 11th Doctor it is!

indiana1000 wrote:The oldest episode ive seen is Troughton and the tomb of the cybermen. Black and white cartoons replacing the missing episodes. It was interesting...

That'll be "The Invasion", because the BBC in their wisdom junked a lot of their original tapes of episodes from their archives. Two of the eight parts of Invasion are missing, the cartoons in with the original episodes work really well I think. Tomb of the Cybermen exists in it entirety and is definitely worth getting. All the Troughton ones are, for the few that exist. You should get the boxset of "The Beginning" because that has the first three stories one of which is the first Dalek one and it's pretty cheap now on Amazon and the like. It's the best and most logical place to start watching Hartnell.

It's difficult to judge Paul McGann, I liked what little we saw, I loved him straight away and he's done very well in the audios. All the Doctors have actually, Colin Baker has done exceptionally well considering the often hated era of the show in which he worked.

I can't vote because I like them all too much, if I watch a story, I decide that Doctor was really good, and then I watch another I like them too. I love Paul McGann, but he's mostly unfulfilled potential. Pertwee's whole era is loveable, not just because Pertwee was a great Doctor but he had the UNIT and the Master and it's one of the most memorable and lovely periods of the show. Tom Baker is, franky, the man. In his earlier seasons he had some of the best stories the show ever made, but in later seasons under different producers it turned to cheap humour and undermined the show. I find Davison's period a bit bland, and Colin Baker was handed some total rubbish to work with, but both have their enjoyable moments.

I should stress I still really like McCoy's Doctor, I'm just having to split hairs to make a choice in the thread.

On a side note I can't remember which episode that is, was it the cat one? I am getting the Doctor Who DVD thingy at the moment mind, the 9th and 10th Doc's finished a while back, and it's now moved into the first seven. Think I have two McCoy DVD's so far, will have to check if I have it.

Will give it a watch if I do.

Survival has the Cheetah people which must be the one you mean. It's also the last of the original series run and has been out on DVD for a while.

Of the McCoy stories I like Battlefield (a guilty pleasure), Greatest Show in the Galaxy and Remembrance of the Daleks (released on DVD). Greatest Show is a bit weird, but I'd like it on DVD when it is released, lots of people think highly of Ghostlight (also on DVD) but I'm not keen myself.

Here's a great tribute video with clips from every Doctor Who made apart from the most recent few. A a hobby he also colourises some of the original B&W stuff, his channel is well worth a look and is the best example of colourising I can think of.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCZhlEdGIm0
