CCS? Do you run one or two? Do you save the second spot for a Lord Commissar, a Primaris Psyker or a special character?

The reason I ask is because when I read army lists for a mechanized vet list I rarely see more than 1 CCS and the other slot is not used.

Me personally I run:

CCS 4xPG, Chimera HHF. (Sometimes a PP, Carapace or Advisors)
CCS 4xMG (in a Vendetta).

The first gives my maim lime orders, the second gives my alpha strike element be it a SWS or a MeltaVet squad some orders.

How do you run yours?

I think the problem I have with 2 ccs squads is the sillyness of it. Would you really have that many high ranking officers in a small force? CCS. I usually dont' have enough stuff worth giving useful orders to at any given period of time to really justify spending the extra points for them. If all I wanted was a special weapons squad, I'd take more PCSs for cheaper.

Traditionally, I've run them with 3 meltaguns, but after game after game of them not actually meltagunning things, I've very recently switched over to a high power heavy weapon (like missile launcher or lascannon) and a master of ordnance. We'll see how that goes.

Otherwise, I ran straken briefly, but didn't find him up to advertised levels of awesomeness in my particular list, and so eventually dropped him.

I have run 2 HQ choices in the form of a CCS and a lord commissar before, but only when I have ogryn.

CCS. 3 is good enough for Melta to do their job, especially when they're likely to pass their own order. I've had some occasions where they don't do much, like Ailaros said, but I've had them do more than their share in other occasions.

I have a hybrid list, and I'm running two CCS, both with 4x Plasma. I went with this because I have three blobs and two PCS, so I didn't really need Veterans to give me more troops, plus CCS with 4x plasma is 5 points cheaper than Vets with 3x.

Comparing SWS to CCS with plasmas: SWS with 3x plasma is 80 points. Two of them gives you 6 hits on average. A CCS with 4x plasma and a plasma pistol comes in 40 points cheaper for the same number of plasma hits. Yes, there's something to be said for flexibility, but if you're meched up in Chimeras, that's 95 more points, since you need an extra one.

Usually I run mine with 4 Melta, but I've been thinking more and more about Plasma... I'll have to give it a whirl soon.

This is actually illegal. You can't have more than 3 SW's if you include a medic. Medic, Vox, Standard all take away a pecial weapon.

Well fluff aside is there any reason not too? I mean if you trully are writing a tournament list why would you not use the second SW platform that can order itself?

If I was not running the second CCS I would honestly run a melta/demo/VetSquad w/Bastonne just to ensure the target goes down. But I feel it is too muxh of a point sink. When for 30points more I can have 4 more MG and 2 orders. Granted now I need two transports. 4 plasma guns
carapace armor
astropath (if I have two or more things deep striking/outflanking)
chimera with HHF

If I run one in a mech list, then it's the same as above except one less plasma gun and the inclusion of a Standard.

If it's a 2500+ point game, I consider running two. The other one is going to be:
Some sort of heavy weapon (usually a lascannon, though I also do a missile launcher)
Standard

He babysits the couple HWS I would set up to safeguard the closest hypothetical objective, and is ready to issue BID.

As far as the fluff perspective, I always pictured him another officer of (probably higher) rank. He stays on the back field because he's not suicidal enough to get his hands as messy as Commander Lebedeff, and he's high enough rank that he doesn't need to worry about Lebedeff trying to get a commissar to frag him if he's not up there fighting just as hard.

You can't do that, a medic replaces one of the veterans. CCS only. The equipment and possible extra members ( Advisors etc. ) depend on the points limit and type of game ( normal, Apocalypse, Spearhead, Planetstrike ).
