My attempt at magnetizing the Warp Lighting Cannon/Plague Catapult kit (WIP)

I started work on magnetizing my Warp Lightning/Plague Catapult kit. The inner nerd in me demands that I do this .... so here goes. I think it'll actually turn out ok, just a lot of stuff to figure out how it all will need to go together.

I think the hardest part was figuring out a) what flexibility I needed to build into the main arm and b) how to do it. In hindsight, as long as you can take off the counterweight on the catapult, the arm will flip right over. No need to magnetize the pivots. However, I did. The first step is whittling down the mounting pegs so that they are a uniform 1/8" in wide. This pic shows the trimmed peg on the right, the original peg on the left.

Next, I cut a 1/8" sleeve using plastic tubing that will fit over my peg. I snipped off the original one, leaving just a little bit, glued my plastic sleeve to it, then glued a pair of 1/8" disc magnets inside. Another pair of magnets went into the mounting holes on the pivot wheels

Current state:
So far, I have the main arm and basket magnetized and am working on the connection points between the big piece of warpstone, the bushings (1/8" disc magnets), and how the warp lighting discharger attaches to the arm (1/16" magnets in 3 spots).

When I'm done and if it is successful, I'll write up an article.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Good productive weekend. Chaos Land Raider is primed black, as well as 20 zombies for Junior Paint Minion. Warp Lighting Cannon kit is magnetized to allow switching between the two variants.

All in all, I think there are 19 separate points magnetized, using 19 1/8" disc magnets and 20 or so 1/16" disc magnets. I still need to green stuff over the exposed magnets on the big piece of warpstone, as well as on the end of the catapult arm, but all in all, I'm happy that I was able to do it.

Plague Catapult

Warp Lighting Cannon

My attempt at magnetizing the Warp Lighting Cannon/Plague Catapult kit (WIP)

If I had to do it again, I'd rethink magnetizing the main arm pivots. Don't think that is necessary, though having it removable sure makes painting easier. Also, I would have gone with the mid-height frame, not the low one. The low one looks better for the cannon, but is too low for the catapult ... not enough space for the arm to actually flip up and over.

That's very cool. It is easy to get carried away with magnets, as I know to the cost of my spare time!

I guess I will have to try that as well. Thanks for the assisstance with that, maybe if I am lucky I can get my airbrush parts in so I can finish painting.
