Request: Please do a magnetising a leman russ tutorial

I've recently tried it myself but wasn't very happy with the results.

I'm hoping someone on dakka could give me some better tips for my next one. I've had problems mostly with the sponsons.

I could do one myself, but I'd hate to be the first one to do it considering it didn't turn out that good.

Request: Please do a magnetising a leman russ tutorial

I did, more than once I've misread "Land raider" as "Leman russ". Unfortunately neither of those apply to my situation - the leman russ is fairly different from either.

By the way, many thanks for that awesome sentinel tutorial It was what inspired me to start magnetizing.

Edit: In case anyone is wondering: The main complexities when doing the leman russ are making sure the sponsons are removable. Fairly doable, but I've found they're quite hard to get stable and not slide off with some minor gun movement.

I've got an unbuilt Leman Russ sitting here waiting to be the prototype for a kit, but it will probably be two or three weeks before I get to it.

How pressed are you to get this done? If it's a matter of one or two things that were particularly difficult, let me know and I'll see what I can come up with.

Re:Request: Please do a magnetising a leman russ tutorial

What parts are you looking to interchange? I have taken both a Leman Russ and Demolisher and magnetized the weapons.

Actually, the Leman Russ turret needed to be magnetized so that the weapon can be changed out. What I did was build up the top with Green Stuff then place magnets on the inside so it 'snaps' together holding the weapon in place. If you want the weapon sponsons on the side, just build up a bit with Green Stuff then drill a hole in the side of the tank so the magnet sits flush. I did this so I could use it with or without sponsons.

Demolisher turret is easier. Just need to drill a hole for the magnet in the part that fits in the turret, then place magnets inside the barrels so they attach on.

Hope this helps.

Sorry about taking this long.

My main problem is the sponsons. I just can't make them in such a way that they don't slide off with minimal movement. I cant get a stronger grip if I reinforce the magnets, but I'm currently using 6 6mmx2mm to attach a single sponson, which just sounds slowed.

Then I guess the next question is what type of magnets are you using? I use 1/8" x 1/16" from K&J Magnetics and they hold plenty strong. Just 3 magnets hold mine perfectly strong when I want to use it.

That 6 magnets would not hold seem very odd. Off the top of my head I can think of a few things that might cause it.

1) Like t8erstick asks what type of magnets. I use rare earth magnets and they hold very well.

2) How deep are the magnets recessed? I put mine just deep enough so that they won't touch.

3) Is this the really old model with metal sponsons?

The answers may help with your next project, but the simplest way to fix this one may be to drill matching holes in the sponson and the hull. Glue a small bit of plastic tube into the hole on the sponson. Then slide the tube into the hole when mounting the sponson. Or you could glue someting to the hull just below the sponson for it to rest on so it doesn't slide down.

rwzimmerman wrote:
1) Like t8erstick asks what type of magnets. They sell them over at maelstrom games.

rwzimmerman wrote:
2) How deep are the magnets recessed? I put mine just deep enough so that they won't touch.

They're not actually recessed. I put them inside the track assembly up agains the surface where the sponsons are. The sponsons themselves have greenstuff and plastic rods holding the other magnets up agains the hull.

rwzimmerman wrote:
3) Is this the really old model with metal sponsons?

No

The sponsons themselves adhere very strongly, it's just they slide incredibly easy for the grip they have.

rwzimmerman wrote:
The answers may help with your next project, but the simplest way to fix this one may be to drill matching holes in the sponson and the hull.
