The feedback is appreciated Loch. Based on most of the feedback we have received on the primer thus far, we will more than likely (about 95% sure) use the missions as they currently are. A lot of favorable input has been given to that format. I understand the Nova's reasoning for using the format they do, I understand the reasoning for ATC using the format they do, and I understand the reasoning for BOLsCon using the format they do.

I think all of these tournaments are moving in the right direction as far as mission and rules. A lot of progress was made in late 2009 and 2010 towards making Tournaments more attractive to the competitive gamer.

Thanks for any opinions or feedback. They are much appreciated.

Having different goals primary each round forces players to adapt their tactics each round, and in my opinon reflects a better test of skill than having players run the same mission four times.

Since I "invented" the NOVA I guess (really lots of player input did), I'll echo Lock a little bit here. The reason we rotate goals is b/c really no goal perfectly balances all codices. 5 Objectives gives advantages to some dexes, KP to others, etc. These aren't MAJOR advantages in good missions, but they're there. Step 1 of the NOVA format is having all goals be designed tie-able by a player whose army isn't perfect on the match-up, and won off tiebreakers that are more favorable ... forethought and much more tactical play generally result (generally, ofc), especially between closely matched players. You also have no ties, and no margins of victory - if you don't have enough rounds to get a solo undefeated, split your best general prize pool evenly among all undefeateds and give your Best Overall based on 33% competitive / 33% artistic / 33% sports.

The reason the goals rotate is that if you have a dex that doesn't do well at the primary, but can play hard and tie it to force decision on 2ndary or tertiary ... that's doable once or twice, but being forced to do it every round? Not so balanced anymore. Note, I haven't studied the OP / tourney in question's details too in-depth, and I'm not trying to say they're bad or wrong or ANYTHING ... I just wanted to reinforce that the particular quote I've included above is generally accurate in terms of understanding WHY the NOVA format's goals rotate by round, instead of being the same every round in terms of priority.

Re:Endless Gaming Grand Opening 2,000 Point 40K Tournament Saturday 3/5 (Raleigh, NC)

Copy and Pasted below are the mission rules that will be in effect for all 4 rounds of the tournament.

Mission Goals

Three goals will be used in every mission. All three are of equal importance and will be used to determine the winner of the game. In each game only one player may accomplish each goal. Goals are not awarded if players draw on that goal. If that happens, then no one gets credit for accomplishing it. The three goals for each mission are as follows.

Annihilation (see Warhammer Rulebook page 91 for details)

Capture and Control (2 Blue objectives) (see Warhammer Rulebook page 91 for details)

Seize Ground (Automatic 3 Red objectives) (see Warhammer Rulebook page 91 for details)

The objectives for the Capture and Control are completely separate from the Seize Ground objectives. In each game there will be sets of 3 objectives (Red) and sets of 2 objectives (Blue) that are independent of each other.

To prevent objectives becoming unintentionally worth more than they are intended to be, no Blue “Capture and Control” objective may be within 12” of a Red “Seize Ground” objective.

It is important to reiterate the point that there are no draws on goals. One player accomplishes the goal or the other play accomplishes the goal. In the event players draw on a goal (ex. If in round 1 player A earns 6 KP from player B and player B earns 6 KP from player A, then they draw that objective and thus no one accomplishes it. This is done to encourage sportsmanship and fair play, among all players in all rounds, and to prevent players agreeing before hand to play for a tie. Thus undermining the integrity of the event as a whole.

Determining the Winner

When the game ends total the completed goals for each player.

The player who completed the most goals is the winner. In the event this results in an even number of completed goals, then determine the victor by totaling up the amount of victory points each player scored from the others army. The player that scored the most victory points while completing the same about of goals, is the winner.

---

As you can see the missions are similar to the Nova Open. The difference is instead of rotating Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary goals each round, in all rounds all the goals are equal. So for armies that may struggle in one particular mission type will find that each round they have as much of a chance as any other army.

Example Match Ups

Army A has 1 scoring unit and 9 total KP. It is built to smash face. Army B has 5 scoring units and 18 total KP and is built to be better at objective missions. It is less about "killing" and more about being "tactical."

In the scenarios we are using both armies have an equal chance of winning every one.

In a scenario that might weight different objectives differently or higher/lower or primary/secondary. The round that these 2 armies meet could help determine the outcome. As army B could try and pick off the 2 scoring units of army A and then play keep away to win on a primary of objectives. If the primary was say annihilation the army with 1/2 of the KP is at a distinct advantage.

---

Hope that clears up any confusion. MVBrandt didn't seem 100% on our mission rules based on his comments. The Nova is a great event and all my friends that went last year had an amazing time. It has become one of the very premier events in the country. Hope I can make it soon or later. That and BolsCon are definetly events I would like to attend.

IMO both systems are very good and I think both are headed in the right direction for the tournament scene. Both advocate players playing to win. Both systems seek to test skill and not merely how one reacts to a random "house dreamed up" mission.

---

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I'll re-post the link to our tournament primer for people in the event they missed it in the OP.

http://endlessgaming.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Tournament-Primer-Final4.doc

This should answer almost any question or confusion about the tournament or the rules.

One month to go.
Endless Gaming Grand Opening 2,000 Point 40K Tournament Saturday 3/5 (Raleigh, NC)

For the record, this tourney set the standard on every front.

The location was great, there was a coffee shop around the corner as well as a few nearby eateries (as in walkable... and a bar!).

The tables were beautiful, there were plenty of them, and you weren't right on top of anyone else.

The event was incredibly well run. EVERY round started and ended on time. Ample warnings were given on time left in the round.

The missions were all smooth and were published well in advance.

The prize support was impressive and well spread out. Prizes were give to first, second, last, player's choice, favorite opponent, as well as about 8 door prizes that were raffled out during the award ceremony.

The players played tough but were also friendly and fair.... "page 5" was read before the tourney began.

You had better believe that I will be clearing my schedule for the next tournament run by Endless Games.

Endless Gaming Grand Opening 2,000 Point 40K Tournament Saturday 3/5 (Raleigh, NC)

Without a doubt, it was the best tourney I've participated in North Carolina (lived here since 2003).

Positives:
-Fantastic store with ample space to game.
-Awesome tables
-Next to a coffee shop and a bar/restaraunt
-Missions were very well thought out and (3 out of 4 games) were very challenging (I got spanked bad 1st game, but not b/c of bad mission design)
-Very timely
-Very clear to understand each mission
-Time was not an issue; always informed.
-4 Round, 1 day tourney was outstanding.
-Really fun players.
-Great prize support and raffle (although I understand this may be a bit higher b/c it was the store's grand opening)

Needs improvement:
-it's an hour and a half away from my house

Overall, outstanding event and has now set the bar the Triangle/Ft Bragg area. It was well worth the drive and I will be ensuring I get to as many as Endless Games runs as possible.

The only small critique of the event that I have is that It was possible to play on the same table the whole day. I noticed that the person who won, was placed on Table one at Random for round 1, kept winning his games, and stayed there. 4 games on the same table is a bit much in my opinion. It might be better if regardless of your record, you could not play on the same table twice. Just my thoughts.

Endless Gaming Grand Opening 2,000 Point 40K Tournament Saturday 3/5 (Raleigh, NC)

The tournament was great. The missions were new and very challenging. Table one did not work to my advantage at all. My speeders die quickly every game because there was nothing to hide them behind. There was line of site on the entire board, nothing to hide behind. I would have liked to played on one of the boards so I would have to weather all the shooting before getting into cc.
I am very thankful that none of my match ups were guard or the new dark eldar venom list. These would have eaten me alive. Charlie I hated that you first game back was against this list and the mission didn't play to your favor. The deathwing on deathwing match up was an awesome game, Mike and I learned how to tweak both of our lists. I know my list will change because he helped me see the light on some units to bring.
Brian Blood Angels did every thing right and I had a round of dice rolling that will forever go down in the record books as providence from the Emperor himself (yes, it was all just a normal brick of dice, they went very cold against Walsh later that night). The talk of the counts as deathwing future was funnier than gak!!
Neil was awesome opponent and I wish we could have gotten to turn 6 and possibly 7. We will have to play another game in Easley over the holidays when your down visiting your family. All the area terrain I was shooting over gave him cover saves on the orks from my frag missles. Oh well onto plan B.

Overall there were a lot of great people who I didn't get to play against. However, I did have 4 great opponents throughout the day. The boards were great. My "island" was defended all day long and in the end I had to lose to Walsh's SW or I would have had to take it home with me right?

Mike and his family did an awesome job with the tournament. I look forward to going up again for another tournament. Well worth the drive. Long live page 5!

It definitely shows. Also, I hope there are no big issues if we utilize a modified version of your tourney format down in Fayetteville. It played very well and allows for a variable number of players (we originally had a cap of 16 players, but we will end up with more and the store owner does not want to leave anyone out of a day of gaming).

I'll definitely be coming up for more 40K and possible Warmachine tourneys.
