You paint the spot you want to be golden with mithril silver... Yes! Mithril Silver! Then you apply 4 thick coats of gryphonne sepia (remember to let it dry after every coat).
Then you can Highlight it with dwarf bronze or shining gold.

If you don't want to highlight, then before the washes you paint forst woth boltgun metal, then chainmail and then with mithril silver.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Of course then there is the easy way...
How is the second method you described the easy way? It looks a little more tricky compared to the layers of sepia. If your showing people how to paint a good gold, why show a bronze necron lord? Hard to believe this when you don't have a good example :/

The OP's looks quite bronze, or even, the way it's applied to the Necron, like rust.

I'm not a very good painter, but I did something like what 40K Ninja did when I was painting my Space Marines a couple months ago, and it worked well. I don't have them with me, or any pictures of them, which is unfortunate. I don't think, in terms of detail, they're very good, but I think I got the actual gold color nearly perfectly.

I undercoated the minis Chaos Black.
I basecoated them with Iyanden Darksun.
I then painted them with... I don't remember, the darker of Vallejo Burnished or Glorious (?) Gold
Wash with Gryphonne Sepia
Drybrush the other gold.
Wash with Badab Black

Profit.
