Eisenhorn

Have anyone read Eisenhorn trilogy? I was thinking of beginning reading those books, they have told me it helps a lot to understand the 41millenium's world and the way people live.
Any suggestions if it is worth it? Dan Abnet is for sure one of the best (im reading Gaunt's Ghosts as well).

The Eisenhorn trilogy is well worth the read, as is Abnett's Ravenor, which isn't a direct sequel but has subtle ties to Eisenhorn.

The Eisenhorn books got me into 40K and I highly recommend them. Just, as always with Abnett, be patient. He really doesn't seem to have a proofreader, and a typo ruins a cathartic scene pretty often in his writing!

Eisenhorn

Easily beats Gaunt's Ghosts. Of course, I really didn't like Gaunt's Ghosts, mostly because by the end of the first book I was thoroughly sick of all the characters, especially Gaunt, and by the end of the second I actively hated all of them. Abnett is just much better at writing the pseudo-detective/spy type story that both Eisenhorn and Ravenor has than a war story, and the scenes involving larger combats in both Eisenhorn and Ravenor were likewise rather poorly done, just like in Gaunt's Ghosts.

I dont think you'll find many 40k fans that arent fans of both Dan Abnett and the Eisenhorn trilogy. Eisenhorn was the first 40k fiction that i read, and i have yet to read anything that has beaten it, though at times the Gaunt's Ghosts books have come pretty damn close. I might even go so far as to say that the trilogy is better than anything i have read outside of 40k fiction too. The plot is absorbing and immersive and the way that eisenhorn's character develops thoughout the story is very subtle, but cleverly done. the book do also give a good insight into how everyday life within the imperium works, unlike most 40k fiction which concentrates much more on battles and life upon starships an the like. Recommended to absolutely anyone and everyone who can read.

Eisenhorn

I'm reading it, and very much enjoying it! Definitely like the look at lots of "everyday" imperial situations. Wasn't sold on the writing style at first (the first person thing wasn't carried off well at first, but it gets better).

Abnett is pretty good. Probably his biggest weakness is his tendancy to "level up" his protagonists (see Gaunts Ghosts.)

Eisenhorn is probably abnetts best series. Gaunts ghosts went on for too long, and I think that Dan finished on just the right note with Eisenhorn. Ravenor is also almost as good as Eisenhorn, minus a few bits and bobs (its more supernatural, lots *unexplainable power* *universal powerful lore* bits).

Inquisition books IMHO are much more a look at the 40K universe as a whole, rather than just the guardsmens POV, which is just neverending war.

Inquisition war as well is worth a read, very grimdark, and quite a bit more emotional than Dan's writings.

Would like to offer a dissenting opinion here.

I really liked book 1 but books 2 and 3 were passable.

Book 3 seemed to be in a real hurry to end the story and ultimately left me feeling unsatisfied. Between the 2, Ravenor was more enjoyable and readable to me.

I also really enjoyed the 1st comissar cain omnibus, a real breath of fresh air in the grimdark of the far future.

Enjoy!

I loved the first Eisenhorn, but for some reason couldn't force myself to finish the second book. I didn't care about any of the characters, not to mention my favourite character from the first book was replaced by a girl that was pretty much exactly the same as her replacement (why even bother doing it then?). I'll pick it up again sometime, but it's not my personal favourite. I'll always be a Ciaphas fan, even if "Sandy Mitchel" isn't the best author he's got a great view of the W4k universe and his inquisitor books really get me hyped up.
