				<title>Some of my 3D models</title>

				<description><![CDATA[ Those are pretty darn cool, must have taken a while. My only slight criticism is that something looks a bit off with the shoulder pads, especially on the terminator. Still, i'd give them a rating of awesome.<br /> <br /> grrr]]></description>

				<description><![CDATA[ Vandil - I agree about the magazines, biggest pet peeve about not seeing them with at least a standard combat load (we used 210 rounds or 7 full magazines with more in our rucks while i was in the military) when referencing Space marines. currently he has six on his side and one in his bolter.<br /> <br /> Mr. Nobody - Thanx, the marine helmet took a while, went through several iterations before i was happy with it, i'll slap some color to show you the near end result. Got several more models.]]></description>

				<description><![CDATA[ Scout is perfect <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(72);'>IMO</span>.<br /> The greaves on all the marines and the terminator look a touch off but they remind me of the Mk.13 aarmour or whatever armour that they showed in the Dornian Heresy so it is fine <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(72);'>IMO</span> could easily represent some advanced armour marks.]]></description>

				<description><![CDATA[ One of the hardest things to do <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(71);'>IMHO</span> concerning modeling Space Marines is to get the proportions correct. So many images (3d and 2d) have this enourmous character but either <br /> <br /> A: his shoulders are 3x as broad as a regular human being or <br /> <br /> B: his head is the size of a grape. or<br /> <br /> C: he looks like his armor is a bodysuit<br /> <br /> In my earlier models (not suitable to show to anyone) i fell into this trap and the renders were simply not right.<br /> That was because i started modeling the armor parts first then tried to simply model the head or carapace from that. <br /> <br /> best way is to actually model the whole body including the head, then simply place the armor around it as necessary. so inside the models i actually have a fully rigged body. i'll see if i can find some of my <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(148);'>WIP</span> to show you guys.<br /> <br /> anyways thats why some parts may seem dispraportionate<br /> <br /> <br /> ]]></description>

				<description><![CDATA[ I do this (3d modeling) for a living and I must say your work is pretty darn good. Your level of 'texturing' gives away your skill level.<br /> <br /> Are you using Max or Maya here?<br /> <br /> One beef, however, and not about your ability, is that those shoulder pads look too big. Almost anatomically incorrect so-to-speak. Umm, not that a Space Marine is anatomically correct in the first place...<br /> <br /> Space Marines in most artwork and indeed the figures are completely anatomically incorrect and more often than not vary in scale from artist to artist. I think that is what many are having trouble with.<br /> <br /> When I do my character models, I build up from a basic human form. This allows the figure to 'weild' its 'bulk' better and gives a greater sense of realism. How bulky a Space Marine suit of powered armor is supposed to be without looking cartoonish is debateable.]]></description>

				<description><![CDATA[ The basic problem with them looking off are the proportions - the eyes are too big or too small, the legs are stubby, the upper body is definitely too big (look how long is stomach has to be), the shoulders don't connect properly. You might wanna give us some frontal and side views if you seek criticism. That girl in scout armor is way off as well and looks like a fat hobbit in that suit. you might wanna make the head bigger. <br /> <br /> A good way to make realistic proportions in 3d models is to draw over them the basic shape of a human body as you can judge that sketch easier than some space marine armor. And space Marines still have human bodies, even if with superhero-proportions. I however like that you added a lot of details which is sadly overlooked with <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(3);'>40k</span> renderings. Those huge, feature-lacking armor plates of <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(50);'>GW</span> space marines would never look good on film e.g. as there simply isn't enough detail. So you adding some makes them very suited for CGI flicks and I think your choice of lines, exhausts and vents etc. is a very good one - I think those appeal the most and <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(50);'>GW</span> should learn from your example. Either way, you're making very decent progress! ]]></description>

I'd suggest he'd go to polycount, the place on the net for 3d models <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(72);'>IMO</span> - you learn a lot there and see many cool models and get honest critique. ]]></description>

				<description><![CDATA[ Thanks again for all your comments, i feel like i might need to explain some things.<br /> <br /> i had created a fully normalized human body (although he was proportionally more muscled similar to your professional wrestlers or body builders) then simply created a plane then extruded the edges around the base mesh for all the armor/helmet etc. perhaps its my base mesh that needs tweaking, i am currently working on my Speeder (needs texturing) and as soon as i take a break from it i will throw some renders with the body and the armor scaled around it.<br /> <br /> Again thank you all for the criticism, i would like to do a short animation with these along with some Khorne bezerkers and Renegade Legion troops, but i need the opinion of the people that see this stuff all the time to make sure im not completely off base.<br /> <br /> Again i appreciatte ALL comments (fat Hobbit i loled at that one)]]></description>

Are the helmet's optics aligned with the eyes of the human mesh cause by a quick glance they don't seem to be? It's been a long time since this then but I can remember how fond people were of a model I worked on and its proportions - now disregard that its polycount is around 1400 and it has a 512x512 map but I think it shows that smaller outer shoulderpads are still big enough. If you don't, then that's fine too but I take it that you go for "the official proportions". I did a quick sketch for you where I illustrated my "concerns" - I hope you don't think I just want wish to badmouth your work if I crit parts of it - I just think that with a few tweaks they could become awesome, flawless models. I take it you'll see the smaller shoulderpads and maybe the too long belly/chest on the pic. Hope you get them done soon. I'm mainly doing textures but if you need something there for your short flick (I've also studied film so I might be able to assist with other questions next to 3d stuff), I'll gladly help if time permits as it looks like you've UVW-mapped your rhino and would maybe do the same with your marines. When you did some side/front view renders you should really post them at some places like polycount or cgchat - I guess some pros see a lot of things very differently than I do and a the more opinions, the better. Either way, you have a really great start there (and I especially like the added detail - not too much but enough to make them look less bland than they certainly would if you didn't add it) and I can only see it becoming better. As for the face - I guess if you centered your movie around Blood Angels, this one might work well as they're prettier than most marines (I don't know too much about BAs but I think I recall them and the Emperor's Children to be the pretty ones). Either way, for your short flick, you might wanna avoid showing skin as it is by far the most difficult thing to pull off. We humans know exactly what's off with movement in organic subjects (from our time as apes running away from those mean, big cats I was told) but a guy in a huge ceramite armor - we have no clue how they actually move and how the light would reflect off of their armor. So that makes it easier to create a convincing image! <br /> <br /> ]]></description>

				<description><![CDATA[ i have subscribed to cgsociety, and scifi-meshes, and looking to them for Modeling/Texturing/Animating issues, and critiques.  I mainly posted here for the actual Warhammer aspect to make sure that i didnt add a lightsaber to a space marine (isnt that what a power sword is?) and have the community tear me a new one.<br /> <br /> as i remember <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(10);'>BA</span> are very "vampiric" in appearance so i could use the generic mesh for them i guess <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(84);'>lol</span>, anytime someone says vampire nowadays tho all i see is my younger sister screaming "Team Edward"!!!!<br /> <br /> one thing i did notice is that blur studios did not have the <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(119);'>SM</span> captain say any words in the original Dawn of War trailer, and he only spoke in the second one. may be a lot more complicated to create a facial rig for morph targets.<br /> <br /> we'll see]]></description>

				<description><![CDATA[ redguardsman - ive had different versions since 2007, but really have not dedicated enough time to truly learn it until about a year and a half ago. as far as time its hard to say, been switching between models back and forth just to keep the creativeness peaked. but i started these back in August, working part time on them. <br /> <br /> Uhlan - yeah i just started with Zbrush, i had actually textured the Rhino and Dreadnaught in Mudbox,  and Zbrush is giving me fits trying to export my texture but i digress. i would like to learn Maya as a lot of companies seem to be looking for it.]]></description>

Love the marine models, I say the shoulders are spot on to what <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(50);'>GW</span> has created XD Although on the assault marines I prefer the beak helmet, his model is also very well done. Most pros always go low-poly first and then subdivide, even for 3d art that is used in movies (where they have the resources to render million polys). As for making 2d appear to be shaded and so on, skinning is another huge skill. It's becoming more and more obsolete as engines can portray more and more polys but it still has its uses. <img src="/s/i/a/c944477abc92c1c101da485e07ff06d8.gif" border="0"> I believe you learn modeling best if you try to trim the fat and don't spend useless polys.  <img src="/s/i/a/5d13fa41280d6fdef786d41bc175d3f6.gif" border="0"> ]]></description>

				<description><![CDATA[ Some people have asked what i intend to do with these models.<br /> <br /> Well here is the basic synopsis:<br /> <br /> established soon after the (13th or 14th?) last black crusade where the Cadian gate has fallen and Abbadon controls most of the primary planets, the imperium decides to try and integrate the original 9 chapters into a cohesive fighting force. (Similar to the Deathwatch) But not controlled by the inquisition, an autonomous Chapter that receivees orders directly from the High Council of Earth. thus allowing the "bueraucrats" a say in how things are handled due to the encroaching threat. (i wanted to show how the differences between chapters, originally creates huge friction, then after time they understand to rely on each others strengths, and minimize weaknesses, so everyone is all smurfy, and rainbows at the end)<br /> <br /> If you notice i have some <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(10);'>BA</span> emblems on my assault marine, Ultra on the terminator, and my standard is Dark angels, with the Dreadnaught being an Ironhand<br /> <br /> (Reasoning behind incorporating all the chapters is <br /> <br /> A: easier to differentiate between characters as they would still have their original markings<br /> B: I wanted to use all the chapters based on the drama that could ensue (Dark Angels working under Space Wolves or vice versa)<br />     1. this way if i was going to make this into several shorts i could show several dynamics that exist between <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(119);'>SM</span><br />         the rebelliousness (word?) of the Space Wolves, the Ferocity of the <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(10);'>BA</span> when the "thirst" takes them, the idiology of the Ultra's, the rightousness of the IF, the proymaniacs of the salamanders, the sneakiness of the Ravenguard,<br />         the monkish manners of the <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(25);'>DA</span>, the sacrifice of the <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(445);'>IH</span>, and the bushido type code of honor that the <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(149);'>WS</span> have.<br /> C: Dan Abnett (Gaunt's ghost author) stated earlier in his career that writing about <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(119);'>SM</span> would be hard as they all have similar goals, upbringing, almost cookie cuters of each other. different chapters include so many more dynamics.<br /> <br /> So now you have this "new" chapter where very few soldiers have worked together (although they are all veterans to a certain degree) that is now the golden child of the imperium, and resentment could build from the originating chapters (seeing as they have to supply them) since this chapter does not recruit individually, but relies on the chapters to provide troops, equipment, etc. also as this chapter gets sent to the worse situations, they have a high casulty rate, providing a huge burden to the originating chapters.<br /> <br /> i thought about using them as defenders but if i do i lose the Capitol Ships (currently working on) and the Dropships (as they would already be entrenched) but it depends again on scope.<br /> <br /> I do want to use some fog ( but so many people bashed the Ultramarines movie, using a high amount of fog, im a little leary)<br /> <br /> Let me know what you think]]></description>

				<description><![CDATA[ just some thoughts, take them for what they're worth...<br /> <br /> You might create an uproar with putting in various chapters into one tiny force from the hardcore-fans. <img src="/s/i/a/6d3c0a908a3861135dfaebde91c0ecf6.gif" border="0"> Going the Deathwatch route seems like a good idea to portray various chapters and their unique personalities, however you can come close to making caricatures if you just make use of the archetypes. It would definitely be easier to just stick with one chapter <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(71);'>IMHO</span>.<br /> <br /> Also, establishing the diegesis (the world your story takes place) is a bit more cumbersome with various different personalities thrown in (and explaining why they are like this) as you have to use your time wisely and its very limited in good storytelling and in respect of how much work it all is. Make sure to SHOW people their characters and not just define them by what they say. <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(72);'>IMO</span>, Ultramarines was very lacking in all filmic aspects - they wanted to show the awesome spees mahrines but then give them chaos as foes who are just as strong. That way the whole super-human qualities of <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(388);'>SMs</span> are downplayed. A short intro with other foes might've been smart as that way they could've shown how much ass UMs kick usually and how strong <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(22);'>CSMs</span> actually are in relation to other enemies. If I ever worked on a movie about <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(388);'>SMs</span>, I'd definitely show how great they are before I present the big enemy - remember that in filmic terms, the story is always simple - the protagonist/main character (Ultramarine Battle Brother, Bruce Willis, Luke Skywalker, etc) gets presented with an obstacle/threat (Chaos space Marines, Terrorists, The empire etc.) and through the story of the film he either personally GROWS, gets some macguffin/gimmick or both and overcomes the obstacle (gets responsible, gets trained to be a Jedi, gives his all etc.). The stronger the character is, the stronger and greater the thread has to be. Now, a movie where a Space Marine had to fight gretchin wouldn't be very interesting, or where Bruce Willis had to get rid of a street gang lead by 10 year olds. Whereas in dramas, the character are not behaving like superheroes and therefore the problems can be a lot less severe.<br /> <br /> And don't let me get started on UM battle-brothers acting like lame rip-offs of Aliens' Colonial Marines, complete with tough talk and fulfilling every cliché possible (down to the hothead (aren't Ultramarines the most disciplined? Kinda <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(481);'>OOC</span>!!!) becoming the new captain). Marines should be very disciplined once they are allowed to wear power armor and not act like 16 year olds... but well, at least a friend of mine voiced a few characters in it, so that's a plus. <br /> <br /> Your new models look very nice, the toes are a bit too long on the dread if you want to stick to <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(50);'>GW</span>'s proportions but your take is much more realistic and it looks good, so no need to change anything about it. 				<description><![CDATA[ the vehicles are pretty close too scale,  i actually am able to put the marines in the <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(87);'>LR</span> and Rhino's, which makes sense from an animation perspective. i will see if i can put both the <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(87);'>LR</span> and the warhopund in the same scene for ya.<br /> <br /> heres the 90% complete warhound, sad part is i think im gonna make him Chaos so the insignia and "authentic battle damage" will need to be tweaked<br /> <br /> <img src="http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h377/RegulusBlack11/Warhound01-1.jpg" border="0" />]]></description>

I realise that most Traitor warbands aren't exactly going to have a heavy Marine presence, but if I were a <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(22);'>CSM</span> and I saw a puny little human trying to be such a show-off about his supposed martial might, I'd squash him like a bug.<br /> <br /> The way he's splashing around Khorne's symbol, you'd think he was an Aspiring Champion; you don't see that much on Renegades.<br /> <br /> Otherwise, I really like it, it'd be awesome if they did a plastic line of Guard that looked like that <img src="/s/i/a/c944477abc92c1c101da485e07ff06d8.gif" border="0">]]></description>

				<description><![CDATA[ good start,<br /> <br /> I would muddy him up abit. they won't be taking very good care of their equipment and these guys look like they are taking very good care of their stuff.<br /> <br /> things like ritual scars, tears in their clothing and armor, maybe a few missing fingers...<br /> <br /> and I do agree there are too many Khorne symbols. maybe each dude would have 1 somewhere on his body. possably not on his equipment but as a ritual scar in his skin(or maybe a bloody smear on his armor)<br /> <br /> these guys will be carrying their original guard issue equipment, it will be highly unlikely for them to have manufacturing facilities capable of stamping Khorne symbols on things. <br /> <br /> <br /> Imperial Aquilas will add a nice touch, suitible defilied of course.]]></description>

				<description><![CDATA[ they look awesome but for me the space marine look a bit short I think they are scaled perfectly but try making them a little bit taller and you have too many gaps in the armor like the arm guards look like they are held by a belt - remember the armor is meant to self sustaining and usable in all environments, even space so it has to be airtight and little gaps as possible - also the terminator looks around the same height as a space marine in normal armor, which shouldn't be.]]></description>

				<description><![CDATA[ You are AWESOME this work is fantastic. You have a real talent. LOVE the look of the marine's armour though the shoulder pads are slightly over sized, the chaos blood pact look great though I'd say add a few more generic chaos iconography to their breast plates, the Imperial Guard are perfect as they are. Now the tanks... The Chimera's turret looks a little too small to me, maybe increase the height and width slightly? The marine tanks look perfect too, as does the dreadnought, the chaos manticore I'd say desperately needs chaos icons on the missiles, maybe a chaos star over the tip of the missile or along the side or something. So overall your work is amazing certain things could use some tiny tweaks but other than those you've got the look down to a 'T'.]]></description>
