ID For Triaminic Medicine?

So today I was out at the supermarket buying milk and some cough medicine for my sister. The medicine was Triaminic Daytime Fever Reducer/Pain Reliever. http://www.triaminic.com/special-offers/index.shtml
The lady at the checkout isle said that I had to show ID to buy that, and when I said that I was sixteen everyone in the two checkout isles near me stared at me like I was trying to buy a six pack of beer at age five.
Does anyone know why I had to have ID to buy that? I think it has to do with making drugs out of it but I have no idea, and it was quite embarrassing.

What's the active ingredient in it? Certain pain killers contain precursors to meth, and are heavily restricted because of it. Most cough syrup contains DXM, which in heavy doses is a hallucinogen, which is a problem in cough syrup because it generally contains acetaminophen, which can kill you if you take enough cough syrup to get an active dose of DXM, and many states have started restricting cough syrup because of the hallucinogen potential (not, notably, because of the fact that it can kill you, but because kids could get high off it).

Yeah, pseudoephedrine is now slightly restricted due to use in meth production.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pseudoephedrine#Other_uses

It's also sometimes used for its own stimulant effects, or to try to increase athletic performance/stamina for exercise, siince it can increase breathing capacity as well as energy level.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1011875/2/index.htm

I've also heard of it being used for dieting, as apparently it has an appetite-supressive effect too.

I think this answers the OP question.....

The Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act of 2005 (CMEA) was enacted in an attempt to prohibit the manufacturing of the illegal drug, methamphetamine. Under this law, sales of certain cold medicines and other over-the-counter products are highly regulated.
.Identification
The CMEA requires that regulated sellers keep logbooks detailing daily sales limits, 30-day purchase limits and verification of proof of identity for any customer purchasing products containing ephedrine, pseudoephedrine and phenylpropanolamine. As of 2010, the sales limit for products containing these ingredients ranges between 3.6 to 7.5 grams per purchaser. Limits vary by type of vendor.
Electronic Recordkeeping
Many states have begun implementing mandatory electronic tracking systems to help ensure vendors are in compliance with anti-meth laws. As of 2010,10 states have contracted with Appriss, a company that provides a cold medicine tracking database known as the National Precursor Log Exchange (NPLEx).
Warning
Penalties for CMEA violations vary by state. However, retailers and consumers who violate anti-meth laws are typically subject to hefty civil and criminal fines and penalties.
.

Read more: Who Monitors the Purchasing of Cold Medicine?
