Speed painting faces

Hello all

I have just started an empire army and I am (like alot of people) having trouble painting a vast amount of faces as quickly as possible.

Anybody have any tips on how to do this? Im currently just doing a coat of elf flesh then drybrushed dwarf flesh. This looks pretty terrible so I need some help!

Cheers

I paint my faces elf flesh, then wash with flesh wash (I think they have stopped selling this but it is basically a mix of devlan mud and sepia, so use either of those and you should be OK). Then I wash the mouth ogre red, and paint the eyes black. Then I use a very watery white to wash the eyes white (the white will run to the edges of the eyes leaving black in the middle).

Very quick, with decent results.

Base face with white.
Apply black ink to face - this leaves you with all recesses preshaded, including the eyes.

Now, Matte medium with the skin tone. This alters the translucency, try a mix of 2:1 paint to medium using mid toned skin colour. The paint will sit on the white in a nice even coat, and the recesses will remain shaded.

Looks fine on the table top, and the eyes look pretty good. Colour them if you feel like it.

This method is slightly better than Paint first then wash, as a wash tends to darken everything, including raised areas. By washing first and then applying medium to the paint, you get a nice flat finish with good shading.

Paint the whole face tallarn flesh, then wash with ogryn flesh wash. Then use tallarn flesh again to pick out any details such as the nose, ears ect. Paint the eyes white and dot with black, then any teeth also paint white.
Worked wonderfully on my Crimson fists chaplain ^^

I dont know if you have access to an airbrush but I paint faces the following way;

1. I leave the heads off of the bodies and attache them to tooth picks for easy handling

2. I airbrush a base coat on the heads using Vallejo Tank Green

3. Using the airbrush again and from a down ward angle I spray Vallejo basic skin tone. The flesh color piskcs up the highlights while it blends w/ the green making a natural shade

4. I then wash the face w/ sepia and let it dry, depending on the level of detail I want I may go further, otherwise I leave it there.

Example;

The face of the sgt was done using the above steps but I added some more highlights.

This one was done using the above steps and I only painted the eyes.

Ashton
