Hive Guard are good. Though, you may want to consider zoanthropes as well.

Trygons are one of the best HS choices tyranid have, and for reason.

Tervigans are common TROOPS choices. FnP onto any unit you want and a 6 wound T6 3+ save SCORING Monstous creature is always nice to have... especially one that spawns gants that it buffs into a very strong CC unit that also scores.

Some people still stealer shock, which is just mass genestealers. Fun, but not competitive. Genestealers are just amazing, but mech is annoying...

This may help

Don't listen to any of them.
All Pyrovores.
Okay, looks like im the first non troll xD

Here are the strong units that synergize well:

hive guard
tervigon
mawloc/trygon
termagaunt
gargoyle
genestealers.

Most lists use a variation of the tervigon and hiveguard mix with mawloc/trygon as heavy support choices, also using the tervigon as the HQ or either using a flyrant or just a normal tyrant with a guard or two.

I personally use harpys alot

What goes into a strong Nid list?

If you are going to play 'Nids, you should come to terms with 3 basic facts about your army.

1. You will eat faces in CC (if done right).
2. Your Anti-Tank Options are SEVERELY limited.
3. You have no Assault Grenades.

If you want a ranged tank solution, consider a Tyrannofex with Rupture Cannon (48" ST10) or try dropping in some Zoanthropes for some glass-hammer style Tank Busting.

As for close combat, I recommend throwing as many bodies into assault as you can. Tervigons are your friends. Even if your opponent has marines with a 2+ save, if you fire enough shots/get enough wounds on them in CC, they will fall. Keep in mind that in nonKP missions, the troops spawned by Tervigons don't cost you anything if they die.

Re:What goes into a strong Nid list?

Are you wanting to have a heavy cc nid list or are you desiring to go little more shooty? I prefer shooty.

If you were to consider a more shooty option then I'd bring along some devilgants (Termagants w/ Devourers). Things are killer; literally. A little pricey but worth it IMHO

Mathematically, it's pretty simple.

You have a brood of 20 devilgants stuffed inside 1 Mycetic Spore (kinda like a stomboli now that I think about it). You drop the spore next to your favorite enemy troop unit (possibly Space Marine tactical squad? Seeing as how you played Chaos and all?). Your 20 devilgants (who get 3 shots a model) barf 60 shots of carnivorous brain weasel worms all over the smurfs. The SM unit is 10 strong. That comes out to 10 shots a model. Unless you have the most horrible dice rolls then there's going to be some death on the battlefield and most likely it's going to be them. It's like your devilgants go all John Woo on the smurfs and your opponent gives you this ugly stare from across the table like you just pee'd in his kool-aid.

Hope that helps.
