FW space marine help and ideas needed.

So I got home today and had a packaged wedged in my door. It was filled with MK2, MK3, and MK5 space marines.. and some nifty new bolters.. I got em all unpackaged and now... I dont know what to do with em lol. Theyre going to be painted up as heresy/ pre heresy night lords. I want to make a CPT in Mk3 armor but Im not sure how to make him look captainy.

So I guess heres the questions..

Using the FW MK3 armor, how can I make a CPT look like a CPt.. keep in mind I am horrible with green stuff to the point where a simple cape is beyond my sculpting.. Ive tried lol.

How do I wash the FW stuff so that the paint isnt such a pain to have stay on? Soaking in warm water alone doesnt seem to work.. I guess I need a soap or something.. also some people Ive talked to say that I need to scrub each piece with a toothbrush.. others say soaking will do the job.. so which is it?

Speaking of capes... Ive had this crazy idea that if I dipped a SM backpack banner in really really hot water, it would get soft enough to mold into a cape.. has anyone done this? Could this work? Or am I just setting myself up to be burned?

Also Im looking for any other ideas on how to make these guys really stand out.. Ive got NL minis IVe done in the past in my gallery and I think I have a basic grasp on how they should look.. but honestly FW is expensive so I want these guys to look there best..

Thank you all in advance for your advice.. Im looking forward to getting this project started and posting some pics..

Wash in dishwashing soap with a toothbrush. Be careful of tiny bits as they may wind up going down the drain if you slip.

You can use bits from the Space Marines plastics to enhance one or more of your FW guys to look like a Captain or whatever. Go to your LFGS and ask Marine players for bits if you don't have your own. Crux Terminus, combi-pistols, etc. can often be acquired easily.

Hot water will not soften plastic enough to allow it to be "molded" into anything. Just get a backpack with cape from a Marine player if you can.
