I know what you mean about it being bottom heavy Im not sure what to do though and really dont know how to go about damage as its a strange colour metal colour damage would look rubbish.

What is it that you dont like about the green? is it the little bits like sculls the larger bits of just the whole green thing?

Also I have finished sorting out another one of the older rhinos.











The base colour is a bit poor with stains and things like that. I did not used to be as good with the wash then as I am now as you can see if you compare side shots with the vindicator I did yesterday but aside from paint stripping the whole model there is not much I can do about it.

Crimson you are right. The mud should be on the tops of hatches and less even BUT. I have tried the hatch dirt and it did not look right at all. I would go as far to say it was total gak.

The mud tone is a similar story. Because The tanks are so light when you try to do complex dirt tones on the vehicle it starts to get lost is the bone colour of the main tank. I decided to settle for a heavy wash of devlan mud as it does add a lot of shades to the model. I have included some newer pictures of the vindicator here that hopefully show this. As my new camera is much better.







Hope you can see where I am coming from. As I do agree to you in theory but in practice I have found that this outcome looked better overall?

The new marines will be silver skulls. I will paint them with the new paints as there is no point using any old ones now and they will include a lot of forgeworld. To start with I am building a 1750pt tournament army for next month but after that I will be doing losts of random stuff with forgeworld and other bits.


So a bit about the army.

Bascily as the silver skulls are ment to be all but dead now I am going to do it so every space marine is different. I have ordered a load of forgeworld marines with different types of armour and I am going to mix and match everything so every marine is different and has their own personality. This will also make it look like as things have been damaged they have had to repair with whatever they could get. I have built 3 Tactical veteran sgts which are all kit bashed one of which I have painted and am very happy with the results. I will post this up a bit later so you can get an idea of what I am doing. I have also started painting 5 drop pods as the army I am using next month is drop heavy.

So yeah basicly. Scrap the old marines. Try and sell them to fund new marines make look awsome and have lots of random units just for fun with a tone of forgeworld.

The painted sarge looks great - the use of black helps make him look really nice (Silver Skulls can often be TOO silver). And I like that beefy sarge you're working on, cool!

The converted rifle on your Mk 5 - I like muchly. I too wanted to add some spice to the Marine bolt rifles (I have bought some from Anvil Industries with that in mind).

Lascannon Marine made me laugh (great painting again BTW).
'Sergeant! A tank! Over THERE!'
'Stop pointing at it, you fethwit! Use the lascannon!'

Finally - I fear you question about dread pods and Contemptors was a loaded question. Who WOULDN'T want to get something cool like that?

I have also got a load of different anvil guns coming which is why I am only really building special weapons and stuff atm. I want every marine to be different so many bolters coming and yeah to be honest I thought there would be a few more comments. There are lots of people who just look at the pics though so its alright as long as people enjoy them.

As you liked beefy sergeant so much I thought I would finish him for you.











I like him more than the first one as he looks like a boss.

Also I have painted the multi melta.







I do like the old style guns they are very cool. The third heavy weapon is gonna be a normal multi melta though as they all have to be different.

Lastly today I have made my counts as shrike model.

Not a lot of painting going on the last few days. I have bilt some more grunts though. Also I have decided to add a techmarine style guy to each squad as a squad tech.

The idea is as the Skull have a grudge with the crons my commander has introduced a special rank of techmarine into the squads under his command. Their task simple. Find weaknesses in necron tech and bring this to the attention of the command for action. Its another way I can add some cool gak to the army without worrying about rules as these guys are just marines with bolters that look techy.

Anyway wips of the first one.









I am now gonna spray 3 other scrubs ready for painting. One of which has a forgeworld melta so hes not really a scrub

Simple yet it works. This is done with 2 coats of the new textured paint. I really like it.

I changed the arm on the tech style guy I did not like the bolt pistol. When he is done I will have my first finished squad. Untill then here is the first half.

But blog time.

Went to a tournament sunday. Took my marines. 3rd place Used a drop pod heavy army and trolled my enemies into submission with drop pod barricades

Got raped by grey knight army but thats just how 5th ed worked.

Anyway 6th ed time now. I dunno what I gonna use in tournaments atm but thats not really an issue I am just gonna have some fun with random stuff for a while to get a feel for the game.

Model wise a load of marines are fully done and based now and I have started some more builds.

The one I want to show you tonight is a templar chapion I won in the tournament and have modded to be a power sword sergeant.

Also had a game against my mates ork bike army. Totally trashed each other I had a tactical squad and 3 drop pods left after turn 5 and he had a dakka jet. I won 11 points to 10 so bloody close game I only wont on secondary objectives. Having a unit in his deployment and first blood tipping it my way. Just a couple of pics of the talon in the very early stages of painting. I have added plenty of black to break up the metal work as large washed areas of colour look horrific as a rule.





Notice that one wing is still unwashed so you can see the difference the wash makes to the colour of the silver.

Anyway there is a bit more progress with the storm talon. It now has a mostly painted wing and a fully painted engine on one side. The main body has had all of its black done and I have started the base.

It now has its black parts all painted and some of them highlighted.
The cables that I want dark grey are all done.
I have picked out some parts of the engine that are going to be red and started them. They need washing black.
The base has been started its nearly done just need to paint the edge brown a couple of times to get an even coat.

Still left to paint is all the brass like the front plate.
Burns on the engine and guns.
Blood on the combat arms.
All the purity seals.
Some cables that will be blue and green .
The mechanicus symbol.
All the lights.
Finish highlighting the black.

Doing a campaign and one of the areas is called the array. It has three triple lascannon batteries sat around a fairly large bastion that has another two.

Its industrial paint stripper for taking paint of the hulls of boats ect.

It costs a lot but is the tits it dont damage plastic resin or metal at all and works nearly instantly.

Here is a drop pod that had been painted after one quick going over.



As you can see its pretty good. The paint that remains on this is so thing its basicly a stain and you wont see it once its re primed. Good stuff.

Anyway I am now starting to paint that drop pod and I have built the last marine of the second squad.

Ok big news. Went to throne of skulls and the result was.





GOD OF WAR

In less geeky terms its the award for best space marine player. Which in throne of skulls is what people aim for as the overall winner is very one sided for armies with lots of players.

So yeah 4 wins and a loss. Thats not bad. One of the armies I beat was a 7 flyer necron air cav list. That might of been the hardest game I have ever played.

Also piced up some tastey bits while I was there. Here is some wips of a Caestus assault ram.









This thing was a pig to build :( Got a lot of green stuff work to do to it before its ready to paint.

Also I have a forgeworld iron clad dread. I have put the power fist from the salamanders special dread on him as its awesome.









He is glued in pose including his guns as they are a bit of a gak to keep lose. I will ad some seals and bits to him maybe even some missiles I ned to finalise my army list.

So lots going on.

Basically he had 3 of the doom ones with the beam laser which are heavy support and 4 of the transports which are dedicated transports for most crons things.

The assault ram is just an awesome model but it also has so pretty good rules. Its fairly points heavy over 275 when tooled up but its armour 13 which is mental for a flyer. It can carry 10 terminators and has an assault ramp. Its pretty much a flying landraider.

It also has a very nasty lump of firepower vs ground targets and it can tank shock which for a flyer is mental

Bust mostly I just love the model.

Still trying to figure out why there is not much interest here. You chaps got any suggestions?

In terms of progress. Just picked up another drop pod at work. I have painted the dread silver and given it its black wash and the assault ram has had its first coat of silver and I have figured out where I am going to have the black sections. Should look sweet.

Basicaly for washing large models I use an old tank brush and really slap it on. The trick is to be really quick so that you get no stain lines so do big models in sections where you can stop and joins so you dont see where you start and stop.

Also when your doing it make sure that as you see sections start to clot up that you just dab it with your brush when it has not got much wash on. That will absorb the wash thats left and as its still wet so you can smooth out any strange areas. I also brake the models up with plenty of areas of black or colour. This makes the model more interesting and also large areas of washed flat surface look really gak.

Hope that helps a bit.

Han't done much the last few days. Dread is coming along nicely but the ram has had no more work. I have started building more marines as I need 50 marines 2 ironclads and hestan for the december tournament ow and 7 drop pods :/

Having more than one thick wash will cause big issues like that and also make it harder to correct mistakes as the shades will be hard to replicate. Rather you than me.

To be honest I think an airbrush might be the way to go for doing a good wash but I have no experience with them at all.


Ok so todays progress. I am trying to push through the mass of building I have to do before the next tournament. I have ordered a load more parts and have something special in mind for Hestans personal tactical squad. So keep an eye out for that. Also I have built a hand full more marines and started building another drop pod.

The red is a dry brush of blood red washed with a red ink then a black wash. Its not great gonna gloss it up a bit but apart from that open to suggestions.

Got some good progress today. Done a couple of bits to some of the models and have also started 5 more of the techy squad. Here are the wips.

Not only did I finish these guys today but I have also painted the silver base coat of another 10 guys and given 5 of those their black wash to If I can keep up this pace things will get done in no time and once Hestans squad is finished the rest should take no time as they dont have all the silly red bits and cogs.

Pulled my finger out tonight and did quite a bit of work on a drop pod. Just need to wash its doors and paint is bottom section and its done. I have decided to have silver doors on the remaining pods as they take ages to paint black and highlight and as they are always open you dont even see them so I am trying to save some time

I have done the second door tonight. I shall not take a picture of every door though lol. I am going to just do this one and then get on with the rest of the basic work on the pods and get the rest of the marines done. I need them all painted by the next tournament so extra details can wait till that is done.
