Painting Plague Marines

After toiling the good part of my 40k 'career' away with Emperor-loving Sphess Mereens, I have decided to create myself a small Chaos Nurgle army.
Instead of buying the metal Death Guard models (Damn GW..) I'm going to buy a normal marine pack and enjoy the magic of green stuff.. and drilling.
I have a rough idea of how to paint the armour, the pale-ish hideous green on GW's Death Guard, but I'm still thinking how I would paint deatils such as-
Blisters
Rot
Pustules
I want them to stand out but not ridiculously..

One more idea I was toying with was-Would it be a good idea to cover the marines in gloss varnish, to give the appearance they are covered in some kind of mucus etc??

Thanks, dakka!

RE: Gloss for grossness.

Yep. Works fine. Apply it to where you want the shine. If you're fully varnishing, add it again after your matte coat (you can simply omit the matte in that area, but it's a lot easier to localise the effect afterward) I'm not sure about an all over gloss finish, as it would just tend to look like, well, an all over gloss finish!

What also works is a drop of gloss medium in your paint.

If I'm reading the OP correctly...you'd like some tips on effective ways of making boils.blisters rot and othe gifts of Nurgle stand out against a Greenish paint scheme on your Plague Marines...with out being to OTT...

The best method I've found for doing this is to paint the area..a pustule for example, with Codex Grey then dry brush it with a flesh tone..Dwarf flesh for example, allowing most of the grey to remain, follow this with a very light application of Ball Red wash...this gives the area the look of dead flesh which IMO works very well...

I've used other variations of the same method,Dark Flesh,Graveyard Earth drybrush,,very light Bleached Bone drybrush followed by a blue/Devlin Mud wash...which turned out interesting...but overall I find red and purples to be the best washes to use on "rot"...

Id really advise geting an old test model and sculpting a few areas of pustules and such on it and then doing a bit of experimentaion using the same method until you find a combination the suites you particular taste.

EDIT:...Also,I'd advise against doing an all over gloss....unless you just want your Plague Marines to look wet,the effect looks more like they've climbed from the tub than that they're dripping with disease...
adding touches of gloss here and there, particularly on boils, rotted areas..etc tends to look more effective...and along with a series of "dirty washes" really makes PMs pop.

That's actually the problem with nurgle. They provide GREAT modelling opportunities, but it always seems that any paint job you give them just wrecks them.

The only things I've seen even that even comes close to matching the quality of the conversions tend to involve rust, and involve antlers painted in dark bone colors.
