Fields of Glory - Which Unit

I am currently using a Late Heian Japanese Army in the local clubs FoG campaign. Now, the problem I am having is deciding which unit I use as the compulsory choice for my Cav.

Any thoughts from you out there?

The options are as above.

Bow*/Heavy weapon I know are good all-rounders, but they'er poor and I cant seem to get over that.

Offensive Spear, okay better quality, but they're impetuous and I prefer to be in control.

The last option I put in just before anyone complains. Yes I know Medium Foot in FoG is idiocy! Yes I know Cav/Knights are the way to win, but I play the army not the rules. Even if I lose.

Cheers

Andrew

Who has lost more games than won so far.

I'd go with the Offensive Spear. You only get 1 per 2 shooting with Bow*. Poor quality troops are really bad unless you bring more than 8 bases. Even then they are still bad since you are forced to reroll 6's.

I haven't looked up the army book but I presume your Offensive Spear are Medium Foot. They are good against everyone except Cavalry, Knights and Heavy Foot in the open. If you stay in terrain you can do much better.

I normally play a Knight army but my opponent has lots of medium foot. Once those MF are in terrain I don't charge them because I know I would get tied up for too long and then outflanked.

The LHJ are all Medium Foot.

I have to buy 2 BG as compulsory for my Cav, so somewhere between 12 and 16 bases. I had thought of going for 8 Bow* as a 4*2, troop commander and backed by 6 offensive spear, giving me +2 on coherency.

Do you think that would work?

Andrew

Fields of Glory - Which Unit

Sorry for the late reply. I went to a Field of Glory tournament over the weekend... Did I learn a bunch from that tournament.

If you plan to have units in the back to provide Cohesion test bonus they have to be at least equal quality and half of the support unit must be directly behind the unit taking the test.

I think it will work depending on terrain. My first game in the tournament was so full of terrain that my knights and heavy foot literally had to move through, at minimum, uneven terrain. If you plan your terrain well medium foot can work quite well since heavy foot, knights and I think cavalry are disordered in terrain. They would lose attack dice while you retain all of your dice.

I think you have a good plan there. The bow will usually give most opponents a pause to decide what to do against them. If you have offensive spear nearby then you can support either in cohesion tests or plug up any holes in your battle line.

Good luck!
