Studio Workbench

Rather than flood the chalenge blog with general stuff, I'll keep this thread for my workbench. At the moment, I'm working on a few bits from the Island of blood set, and I'm waiting on an Ork Warboss from AOBR as a tester from a potential customer.

I've had good vibes so far from doing local commision work in the northwest of the UK, but going web based has been tricky. I've asked a few questions to various commission painters about how they established themselves. The general response has been "keep plugging away!" so here I am, plugging like a pluggy thing. I've had a couple of PMs from some of you about getting set up as a commission painter. In each instance, I've given the answer "I'm not sure, but this is what I'm doing!" so I also thought I'd post as many hints and tips up here for those of you who've asked - I hope this helps you get started!

As always, you can check my studio blogs through the sig. I'll post up more interesting things there, but as Dakka was the first community I managed to get settled in, I thought I'd share all the day to day goings on and insights with you guys as a thankyou for your hospitality. I'm about to settle down with the griffon after staring at the challenge troupe master for about an hour, trying to get started! Pictures to follow!

Re:Studio Workbench

Quick couple of shots

Working on the Gryphon. I figure I can get the body of the griffon painted when it's dryfitted together. I'm doing the riders body seperate for the time being. Just marking out colour and detail with a quick base and one of my own brown washes. Colours up are GC Terra and GC Khaki from Vallejo. The darker terra will be highlighted with a 1:1 mix of Khak and Terrai. The Lighter Khaki will get a 1:1 Bonewhite Khaki highlight. I also want to get a dark transition from the tips of the larger outside feathers, but before I do that I might go over with a black ink, to which I'll add Matte medium to break the surface tension, making it head for any recesses and not pool so much on the flats. I want a touch more definition on them.

Next up a quick shot of things I've picked up, and put down today

The bone and blue marine is a tester for a TT commission, IOB Reavers in the background. Something I will never buy again. Models look terrific, but the assembly process was just not enjoyable at all. There was almost an incident with a hammer. Skaven IOB warlord in the back there, again, I doubt I'll ever do one again of my own volition. Detail is good, but far more than is sensible. There's an attraction to shade every single fold in his robe as they're so damned deep, which would look pretty messy on such a small mini. Harlie is waiting for another crack at the diamonds. Something I just cannot bring myself to do after last weeks mishap.

2 Elf mages. 1 for me, 1 as a favour for a friend. An Ultramarine Assault chappy for my gallery

And a little tau bod. I came into a lot of GW gear courtesy of my older brother, who's got a form of CP. He's not able to paint them, so in return for all the gear, I'm doing his tau army up. Every once in a while he can get a taxi up to me and we can have a game or two.

Re:Studio Workbench

Another quick update.

Griffon has had some work done to him. As have the reavers. Bit of a slow day today. Woke up feeling sick as a parrot. Clammy, shaky and trembly. Sat for an hour with the griffon this morning and just couldn't get anything done with any kind of neatness. Must be a bug going round, as wifey is ill too. I imagine she's picked something up from one of her caseload. Spent the morning tending sick wife, napping and a poorly planned trip to pick up a new desklight. GRIM. Grim with extra grey bits. Awoken from my nap by Mr postman dropping off my new photo tent and the warboss from AOBR.

Felt a bit better and got cracking on the reavers. Bit of cleanup to do as shaky hands and a bit of dodgy vision from the fever of doom.

To paint they're ... ok. I'm annoyed by the one piece construction as the brush can't get in at places with any accuracy in parts. I keep worrying that the bits I can't reach will be visible when I come to photgraph them. I've checked and double check and they seem fine, but still can't help worrying. It;s not something I'm comfortable with and it really ruins an otherwise great model.

The warboss though - LOVE HIM. So much fun to paint. The second I unpacked him I was overcome by the urge to paint him. It's nice when you get a mini like that. He's my first ork, so we'll see how we go. Handy tip for anyone thinking of doing commissions - Paint allsorts! You don't want to take a job painting something you've no experience of - it'll lead to headaches! Really looking forward to finishing him up.

I've already got a finish in mind. Dark and gritty. I loved the orks feature by the super talented M.ike. It's just so different from your usual overexagerrated comic book ork. I want to super matte everything, and try to steer clear of very bright colours. Skin is quite bright at the moment. The plan is to glaze over with a darker mix. The green provides the basis of colour. So far, my gallery is all tabletop/tabletop plus. So I want to take this guy a step further. I don't know if it'll be golden daemon standard by any means, but I really want to pull of something cool.

Decided to backburner my Harlie for the time being until I'm not as sick. Probably do him at the weekend.

Love, Snot and tissues. xx

Still Ill. Worse than yesterday. Bluergh.

Spent an hour on the warboss before crawling back into bed.

Slight problem. Either his tunic, or his orky glyph has got to change. I'm just making my mind up as to which. The Glyph works well, creating a triangle of focus with his armour plates, but the tunic is just too similar in colour. It might be his webbing that's to blame though. I might change that to black, along with his belt. Played with some rust effects. More or less satisfisfied with the rust. Powerklaw thingy is going to have a layer of chipped black on the topside of the claws, and I'm going to dust up the red. Skin has had a glaze, but I'm not happy with the finish, so going to redo it with a touch of brown into the mix of the basecoat.

Loads to do, as most stuff is still only basecoated. Not a happy chap as haven't gotten anything done really =/

Re:Studio Workbench

Quick update.

Over the weekend, I've had a few enquiries. One of which I'm particularly excited about. A unit of Nob Bikers, with a painboy and converted Mek on a trike. So excited was I at this prospect, I offered a hefty discount on the job. Just finalising the details, and need to ask permission to blog my progress, but it looks like it's going to be an awesome job and I'm really looking forward to it. I've always been pretty busy locally, but with the web service taking off, it's really very humbling that people out there also like what I do. I am very grateful to each and every person who's gotten in touch - they've all given me such a huge morale boost!

More updates soon.

Edit - done deal. My condolences to anyone facing this beast of a unit on the tabletop in the near future
