Field of Glory?

I'm looking for some information and opinions.

Is the game fun, and are the rules any good? I've played a variety of games - 40k, Fantasy, FoW, Maliaux - so how do the rules stack up?

And any advice for a new player? Places to pick up armies, fun times periods to start in, etc.

Thanks!

well, I have just started myself, played my first game of FOG yesterday, and let me tell ya, it depends allot on what kind of battles your looking for. FOG is just one option, there is impetus, DBA, DBM, warhammer ancients, and, if Hail ceaser look pretty darn awesome, though it has not been released yet. answer? if you have the friend and/or money and/or time to do so, try them all. just wondering, what scale are you doing?

Well, I'm thinking of 15 mm, as that seems to allow a more 'army' like feel to the game without needing a massive playing table.

Could you tell me how your first game went?

Field of Glory?

15 mm is certainly a respectable choice, but the scale of the figures should not actually change the amount of space needed, just the amount of figures in that space, I personally prefer the more epic feel of 6-10 mm, (my roman army, 400 men, cost me 50 bucks) but its a matter of taste.

Ok, about the FOG rules. first off, you are not some God-General in the sky, who's orders are magically heard and obeyed from anywhere across the battlefield. so wither orders and heard and obeyed is a variable. also, like in real life, regimental wipe outs are not very likely to happen, and winning is more about breaking their will to fight then slaughtering them to a man. you can do this by destroying their camp, their command structure, and/or formation. another big difference then most games, at least as I have seen, their is no numbered stat. instead it goes by unit abilities, unit classes, armor, and other traits to decide who wins. this makes sure that super units don't really happen that much. so how my first battle went:

I was Imperial Rome, and he was Chinese. Obviously I was at a disadvantage, but hey, no one trifles with Rome, not even the kong-fu people. My army was ¾ Legionaries who are of superior quality, are armored, drilled, heavy foot class, and with the traits “impact foot” and “skilled swordsmen”. The other one quarter of my men was auxiliary archers. Looking back, I should have gotten some cavalry, but I am an infantry guy. His army was made up of tiny (a few dozen figures) amount of guard calvalry, and the rest being an lol huge amount of zerglings, I mean Chinese spear men, outnumbering me hugely, because they cost a third of what my legions did in points. It was a close battle, but eventually, due to this game being about breaking morale not killing everyone, my roman discipline triumphed! Of course, that did not keep the enemy from sacking my supply camp and killing a large amount of my men.

Ok, I like what I'm hearing so far. And the fact that you can get an army for 50 bucks is amazing!

Any advice on where to pick up miniatures? I'm thinking of picking up the Asian supplement (samurai army? Count me in!). Baccus 6mm looks good to me. The Roman era also look interesting.

Baccus is THE 6mm manufactuerer for the ancient to roman era. in the 10mm range, its a toss up between old glory and pendraken. Baccus is the cheapest (6mm) but is really good qoulity for the size, looks great in massed formations (and very cheap, 96 miniture infantry figures for 10 bucks). Old glory for 10mm, is the cheapest, and, besides a few crappy skulpts and bad basing, is at least the eqoul of pendraken (cept it has no samurai) 15$ per 100 infantry. pendraken has some great skulpts, and has samurai, but is the most expensive of the three, being 20 dollars for 100 infantry.

Welcome to old school historicals. Please notice the steep drop in prices...

FoG is good becuase it's really the base sizes that are important. There's some good figs out there in larger scales, 25mm~30mm, even in plastic, but then you only have like 4 figs per base.

Kovav's assertion regarding 400 figures for $50.00 only applies to 6mm figures. If you wish to use 15mm figures you will most likely see between $4.00 to $6.00 for 8 infantry or the same price for 4 cavalry miniatures.

Old Glory is probably the cheapest within the US. I will admit that my experience with Old Glory is only limited to a 15mm Swiss Pike army. The figures I received are extremely poor sculpts compared to UK and European manufacturers such as Essex and Corvus Belli.

You can purchase 15mm Corvus Belli miniatures from The Warstore if you are in the US. Corvus Belli has a very limited range but they do carry Romans (mostly Republican but some Imperial), Celts, Nubians and 100 year war stuff.

Essex on the other hand carries virtually any army you want. Essex is also very inexpensive at around £2.5 for each blister of either 8 infantry or 4 cavalry miniatures. Unfortunately I have no idea what shipping will cost.

I feel that Field of Glory is a very good system. I've played DBM, WRG and Field of Glory. My favorite is Field of Glory. I also have the Warhammer Ancient Battles v1.0 rules. The WAB rules are basically Warhammer Fantasy Battles V4.0 or V5.0 rules without any magic or heroic characters.

There is a fairly large Field of Glory following in the US. Look up Field of Glory and Field of Glory North America on the Yahoo groups for more information. Slitherine also has a Field of Glory forum online.
