I have an idea how to do it... it involves paper clips, extra bases, some putty, and a pin vise.

Create a stand:

Unfold a paperclip until it resembles a long rod. Green stuff it to an extra base you have lying around.

Put the model together but instead of using glue for the joins... just put them on using putty or something that will allow you to take apart the model after priming.

After priming, take the model apart and drill holes to where the joints are. Use those holes in conjunction with the paperclip/base stands so you can paint them without holding on to the pieces.

Paint pieces.
